Bears win big over Northwest, 71-51

vs NW Final

Men's Basketball | 12/2/2019 10:29:00 PM

Holding the visiting Northwest Rangers to 17-67 shooting from the field, the Bears picked up a 71-51 win Monday night.

A Spencer Rodgers three pointer and Robert Kendrick layup gave the Bears an early 5-0 lead.

The teams then traded baskets for several minutes before Northwest took a 17-13 lead with 9:50 left in the half. Later in the half, an 8-0 run by the Bears (5-3) put them back on top, 26-20, with 4:58 on the clock.

A Damian Dear layup with 0:39 showing gave the Bears their largest lead of the opening half, 38-25. They would go on to take a 38-27 lead into intermission.

Outscoring Northwest 18-9 in the first 10:00 of the second half, the Bears quickly extended their lead to 56-36. Northwest would not be able to recover and could not come any closer than 16 points the rest of the way.

A dunk by Robert Kendrick gave the Bears their largest lead of the night, 71-47, with 0:50 left to play and they would go on to get the 20-point victory.

Bears head coach Bryan Bender said the game was a good "stepping stone (to) show what we're capable of doing, especially on the defensive end. We held (Northwest) to 51 points and 25.4 percent from the field, which is phenomenal."

"A lot of guys stepped up," Bender continued. "Jalon Andrews played really well (as did) Xyshan Jenkins. Goodnews finally showed out on the offensive end. Drelon Pittman gave us a huge lift. It was great to get a win and I'm excited to start Divisional play next week."

Kpegeol topped all scorers in the game with 19 points. Rodgers and Kendrick also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Bears hit 12 of 19 free throws.

Jakobi Pearson led the Northwest (6-2) offense with 18 points. He and his teammates combined to make 11 of 23 free throws.

The Bears return to action, and get MACJC South Division play started, on December 9 when they host the Bulldogs of Hinds Community College. The game is set for a 7:15 tip.
