Bears come up short in overtime

After overcoming a 13-point second-half deficit to force overtime, the Bears came up just short Saturday afternoon on the final day of the Milton Johnson Classic at Chipola College (Marianna, FL) as they fell to the Chattahoochee Valley Pirates 87-82.
 
The Bears trailed 48-35 with 13:00 left in regulation before beginning their comeback. Outscoring their opponents 26-12, the Bears took a 61-60 lead with 2:21 still to play.
 
The Pirates (1-1) then outscored the Bears 8-7 the rest of the way to send the teams into extra play tied at 68-68.
 
In overtime, the Pirates pulled out to an 83-77 lead with 0:59 on the clock. The Bears then pulled to within 85-82 with 0:5.9 on the clock, but were unable to get any closer as they fell to 1-1 on the young season.
 
"Winning is hard," said Bears head coach Bryan Bender. "But, it's even harder when you beat yourself. We lost a game where we shot 4-16 from three (point range) and had 28 turnovers."
 
"We really struggled with (the Pirates') scrappy pressure," Bender continued. "Our defense kept us in it and we made a late push in the second half utilizing our length and 1-3-1 zone."
 
The Bears had four players score in double figures in the game. Xyshan Jenkins led the way with 16 points. Damian Dear totaled 12 points while Jalon Andrews and Devin Evans both scored 11.
 
The Bears made 24 of 33 free throws.
 
Keondre Davis led the Pirates' offense with 15 points. He and his teammates combined to make 26 of 42 free throws.
 
The Bears return to the court on November 8 at Baton Rouge Community College in day one of the BRCC Classic. The contest is scheduled to get underway at 8:00.
