Jay Malone

Men's Basketball | 1/17/2019 11:00:00 PM

The road proved to be extremely unkind to the Bears Thursday night as they suffered an 86-69 MACJC South Division loss in Wesson to host Co-Lin.

A short-range jumper and pair of free throws from Jay Malone helped the Bears take an early 6-2 lead. With 12:24 left in the first half, a Jalon Andrews bucket gave the Bears their biggest lead of the night, 13-7.

The teams would be tied four times and trade leads three times the remainder of the half before Co-Lin outscored the Bears (10-3, 2-2) 8-2 in the last few minutes to end the first 20:00 with a 34-28 advantage.

The Bears trimmed their deficit to 36-34 early in the second half. Co-Lin (9-4, 2-2) would then outscore the Bears 15-9 to extend their lead to double digits, 49-37, with 14:28 left in the game.

The Bears cut the Co-Lin lead down to eight points on three occasions, the last being 55-47 with 10:40 on the clock.

From that point on, however, the game would belong to Co-Lin. Going on a 27-13 run, the home team reached their largest advantage of the game, 82-60, with 4:40 on the clock enroute to the 17-point win.

Bears head coach Bryan Bender said, going into the game the team said they had "to defend and be tougher. In the first half we defended well (but) in the second half we gave up 52 points. You're not going to win any game, let alone on the road, giving up that many points. Co-Lin wanted it more than we did and, at the end of the day, everybody's got to do a better job to win on the road especially in this league."

Malone scored 25 points to pace the Bears. As a team, the Bears made 14 of 26 free throws.

Miles Daniels scored 29 points for Co-Lin to lead all scorers. He and his teammates hit 22 of 30 free throws.

The Bears return to the court on January 22 when they host the Jones Bobcats in a 7:15 South Division matchup.
