The Lady Bears fourth quarter comeback fell just short Tuesday afternoon as they opened the MACJC state tournament with a narrow 47-43 loss to the Holmes Lady Bulldogs.

With the loss, the Lady Bears fell to 18-6 on the season; Holmes moved to 17-7. Despite the loss, the Lady Bears will live to play another day as they have qualified for the NJCAA Region 23 tournament; they will play on March 7 with their opponent and game time not yet determined.

Keturah Bingham, Danyelle Lewis and Rachel Thompson combined to give the Lady Bears an early 7-0 first quarter lead. Holmes then went on a 13-2 scoring spree that left them with a 13-9 lead after the completion of the first 10:00 of play.

The second quarter belonged to Holmes as they held the Lady Bears to a
Kacie Fountain jumper on their way to a 25-13 advantage at the end of the first half.

Holmes did their best to put the game out of reach in the third quarter as they built a 34-18 lead with 2:26 on the clock. Four free throws and a three pointer from
Amari Pittman then gave the Lady Bears seven of the final nine points of the quarter to trim their deficit to 36-25 with one quarter still to play.

The Lady Bears opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run to pull to within 36-32 with 7:08 left in the game. A
Jamaya Galloway layup and Pittman's trey then cut the Holmes lead to 38-37 with 3:48 remaining. Twice more the Lady Bears would pull to within a point, but Holmes would find an answer each time as they held on for the narrow win.

"We struggled offensively in the first half," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "But, when we made some shots in the second half, our energy level was better."

"We are so proud of our comeback against a good team with which we had some matchup issues," Harris continued. "But, the good news is we are definitely in the Region (tournament) and will complete next Wednesday at Mississippi College."

Pittman led the Lady Bears' offense with 10 points. She and the rest of the team made good on 15 of 20 free throws.

Holmes' Vaquela Pimpton topped all scorers with 11 points. She and her teammates were 16-22 at the free throw line.
