Lady Bears open South Division play with win at Hinds

With four players scoring in double figures, the Lady Bears opened MACJC South Division play Monday night with a 66-63 road win over the Hinds Lady Bulldogs.
 
A pair of Jamaya Galloway free throws helped the Lady Bears take an early 6-2 lead over their hosts. Hinds then came back to knot the score at 6-all with 5:11 left in the opening quarter.
 
After buckets from Mylicia Harness and Amari Pittman put the Lady Bears (3-4, 1-0 South) back on top 11-6, Hinds scored nine of the final 13 points to take a 16-15 advantage headed into the second quarter.
 
With the score tied at 18-18, Hinds outscored the Lady Bears 7-0 to go ahead 25-20 with 5:17 left before halftime. After falling behind 26-25, thanks to a pair of
Maddi Gatte three pointers, with 4:26 on the clock, Hinds outscored the Lady Bears 8-4 to end the half and take a 33-30 lead.
 
The Lady Bears outscored Hinds 8-5 to open the third quarter and tied the game at 38-38.
 
Trailing 49-43, the Lady Bears closed out the quarter on a 10-2 run. Tootie Carter's bucket with 0:47 on the clock helped the Lady Bears take a 53-51 lead into the final quarter.
 
The Lady Bears fell behind 57-56 with 4:59 left in the contest before six points from Carter helped them go back on top, 62-59, with 1:44 remaining. After Hinds pulled cut the Lady Bears' lead to 64-63, Galloway nailed a pair of free throws to seal the win.
 
"That was a really, really good road win," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "We had to call on our individual defensive responsibility and our team defensive responsibility."
 
"Jamaya played with great poise," Harris continued. "All of our posts were awesome on the boards. Maddi and Tootie Rankin met the defensive challenge tonight and Tootie Carter had a tremendous block late (in the game)."
 
Galloway topped all scorers with 16 points on the night; she also led the Lady Bears with nine assists. Harness had a double-double, with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Gatte had 11 and Carter totaled 10. The Lady Bears made 10 of 14 free throws.
 
Nakaylia Washington led the Hinds (3-2, 0-1 South) with 14 points. She and her teammates went 13-15 at free throw line.
 
The Lady Bears close out the 2018 portion of their schedule Thursday night when they host the Lady Jaguars of Southern-Shreveport. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30.
