Bears outlast Trojans

Jay Malone

Men's Basketball | 11/30/2018 1:15:00 AM

After seemingly having the game well in hand early, the Bears had to overcome a large deficit of their own before escaping Moorhead with a 69-65 win over the Mississippi Delta Trojans Monday night.

A pair of Jay Malone three pointers helped the Bears take an early 11-3 lead. Later, back-to-back treys from Atticus Taylor left the Bears on top 25-8 with 10:32 left before halftime.

The Trojans' offense then began clicking in a big way to turn the game completely around. Outscoring the Bears (6-1) 29-8 over the final 10:00 of the half, the home team carried a 37-33 lead into the locker room at intermission.

Extending their scoring run to 45-13, the Trojans (3-5) moved out to a 53-38 lead with 13:18 left in the second half.

However, the Bears were not ready to go quietly into the night and they began to slowly claw themselves back into the game. An Avery Diggs layup with 4:12 on the clock tied the game at 63-63. Diggs then added two more baskets to put the Bears on top 67-63 with 2:25 to go. ]

With the Bears on top 68-65, and 0:12.6 remaining, the Trojans missed a long-range jumper that would have tied the game. TJ Ben then added a late free throw to give the Bears their margin of victory.

"Winning is hard, especially on the road," said Bears head man Bryan Bender. "We had 10 days off (for the Thanksgiving break) and (it is) always tough to come back from long breaks and be ready, but we were."

"We got a great lift off the bench from TJ," Bender continued, "And, Avery and Jay played consistently well on both ends to lead (the) large comeback. We just played harder down the stretch and showed maturity to get a big road win."

Malone scored 18 points for the Bears to lead all scorers while Diggs was also in double figures with 12 points. The Bears hit 18 of 26 free throws.

The Trojans were led by Quintaures Boatman's 17 points. He and his teammates went 9-16 at the free throw line.

The Bears remain on the road for their next contest, and begin MACJC South Division play, December 3 in Utica with a 7:30 matchup against the Hinds Bulldogs.
