The 2018-19 basketball season got off to a rough start for the Lady Bears as they dropped an 80-66 decision to the Angelina College Lady Roadrunners Thursday night in Baton Rouge.

After falling behind early, 3-0, the Lady Bears got their first points of the year on an Amari Pittman jumper to make the score 3-2. Angelina College then went on to hold a 26-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Mylicia Harness scored for the Lady Bears to make the score 30-20. Angelina College then scored 11 of the final 17 points of the quarter to take a 41-26 lead into the locker room at intermission.

With 8:55 left in the third quarter, Angelina College held a 46-26 advantage. But, the Lady Bears were not ready to go away quietly. With a Jamaya Galloway free throw and Tootie Carter jumper serving as bookends, the Lady Bears went on a 12-2 run to trim their deficit to 48-38 with 3:56 on the clock. The teams traded points the rest of the quarter with Angelina College taking a 53-46 lead into the final quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, a Ty Lee bucket brought the Lady Bears to within five points, 53-48. However, that would prove to be as close as the Lady Bears would get as Angelina College scored 13 of the next 15 points to increase their lead to 66-50 with 6:04 remaining and would go on to pick up the 14-point victory.

Despite the loss, Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris said "Tonight was very encouraging. Angelina College is a well-coached group that has a dominant inside presence in (2nd Team All-American Natasha) Mack. We had to change defenses too much in game one to counter their inside game. We are learning ourselves and hopefully will grow each time out."

Pittman and Carter both scored 13 points to lead the Lady Bears while Lee also scored in double figures with 10 points. The Lady Bears made 20 of 27 free throws.

Mack totaled 27 points for Angelina College to lead all scorers. She and her teammates combined to make 22 of 30 free throws.

The Lady Bears return to action on November 5 when they face the Lady Dolphins of Delgado at The Alario Center in Westwego, LA. The game is set for a 6:00 tipoff.
