Bears close out football season at #17 Co-Lin

The Bears will try to close out the season strong and play the role of spoilers as they end the 2018 season on the road in Wesson as the homecoming guests of arch-rival Co-Lin.

The Bears enter the game with a 1-7 mark (0-5 in the MACJC South) after last week's 41-0 loss at Itawamba. Co-Lin comes into the contest with a 5-3 overall mark (4-1 South), and #17 ranking in the NJCAA, after a 28-23 loss at Jones College.

Looking at the Co-Lin defense, Bears head coach/offensive coordinator Tim Stowers said it "has been very, very strong throughout the season. They always have great athletes there and they get off blocks and make plays. They do a really good job on that side of the ball (by) being fundamentally sound and carrying out the details of their assignments."

Asked how important it is for the Bears to get a win, especially with it being the final game of the season, Stowers said "Anytime you can get a win during the season, especially against your biggest rival" it's important."

"They have a great football team," Stowers said, "and Coach Davis has done a super job of building that program and that's what we aim to do here. We want to take a step and play our very best game and play well enough to have a chance to win on Saturday."

Stowers said it in order for the Bears to move the football against Co-Lin "we'll have to be very fundamentally sound to be able to execute our offense".

Moving into his keys to a win, Stowers said "We've got to be able to execute our running game better. I thought we'd be able to maybe run the ball a little bit better (this season), but I thought the passing game would not be quite as efficient. But, it's been kind of the opposite because we've thrown 10 touchdown passes and had almost 200 yards passing last week against Itawamba and could easily have had a lot more."

Bears defensive coordinator Kelby Bowman said he expects the Co-Lin offense "to be very multiple. They've got a really good run game. Also, they have two really good receivers who can go get the football."

"I'm expecting them to be who they are on film," Bowman continued. "It's game nine (and) you don't get too many people who will come out and try to do something totally different. They've a spread team. They like to throw the ball and they've got a good run team as well."
As a team, Co-Lin is averaging just over 320 yards per game. It order for the Bears' defense to keep that number down, Bowman said it will take "discipline and fundamentals on our part; it'll take being sound in what we're doing. It's that way week in and week out."

"Our kids have to make sure they adjust to formations," Bowman continued, "and they line up properly and make sure they're executing. We've got to play four quarters, play lights out. Everybody has to be on the same page; from pee-wee football to the NFL, you've got to play as a unit and you've got to be on the same page."

Kickoff at Stone Stadium is set for 3:00. The game can be heard on WAZA 107.7FM and wazafm.com.
