Bears shutout defending state champ Hinds

The Bears soared to victory in their first game of the 2017 soccer season Tuesday night with a 2-0 defeat of the defending state champions, the Hinds Eagles, in Raymond.
 
Taking a corner kick from Santiago Martinez, Maximiliano GigliMaximiliano Gigli headed the ball into the goal at 6:12 of the first half to put the Bears on top 1-0.
 
The score remained 1-0 until the 50th minute when Vicente Tellols played the ball over the top of the Hinds defense. Ty Ware then chested the ball down and volleyed it into the goal to increase the Bears' lead to the final 2-0.
 
Freshman keeper Conner Smothers recorded the shutout for the Bears with three saves.
 
"It makes me feel good about the rest of the season," Bears head man Zach Mills said after the game. "Of course, it makes me a little anxious (too). I know that everyone is going to see this and know that we're going to be one of the teams to beat this year. I know my team is going to work hard enough and keep improving and all this hard work is going to pay off in the end."
 
The Bears make their home debut Friday when they host the Itawamba Indians for in a 4:00 contest. They will then take on visiting Northwest Saturday at 3:00.
