Bears split with Northeast after 11th inning win in DH finale

T Tez Cole's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th allowed courtesy runner Kyle Coleman to score from third base to give the Bears a 5-4 win in game two, and an MACJC doubleheader split, with the visiting Northeast Tigers Saturday evening. Northeast took the opener 24-9.

The Tigers (19-23, 10-14) led the nightcap 2-0 before the Bears got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Loading the bases without a hit,

Brantley Hughes' sacrifice fly allowed John Marcus McDowell to cross the plate to cut the Bears' deficit to 2-1.

Three runs crossed the plate for the Bears, in the bottom of the fifth. An error allowed courtesy runner
Gerald Groue to make it home. Andrew Beesley, on base with the first of his two hits in the game, scored from third on Cole's first sacrifice fly of the game. Finally, Chance Groue's sacrifice allowed Hughes, on base via a fielder's choice, to score to put the Bears on top 4-2.

The Bears' lead was short-lived, however, as the Tigers used a double and two singles to tie the game at 4-4 in their half of the sixth.

With chances to score additional runs went by the wayside for both teams, the game remained deadlocked until Cole sent the hometown fans home happy with his 11th inning walk-off out.

Cody Miller got the win on the mound for the Bears (14-27, 3-21), giving up only one hit and two walks in four innings of relief. He struck out one batter. Starter Tyler Pigott went six innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on nine hits and a walk while striking out seven batters.Josh Merchant pitched one inning, striking out one and giving up one hit.

Scooter Ginn had two singles for the Bears while Austin Moen had a double.

The Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one and were not headed the remainder of the game.

The Bears put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first when Beesley, on base with a lead-off double to left field (he later added a single), scored on Hughes' two-base hit to right. Hughes scored on Cole's base hit.

Three runs scored for the Bears in their half of the fourth. Cole walked to lead off the frame and scored two batters later when
Ray Hutchinson reached base on an error. Ginn's line-drive triple to centerfield scored Hutchinson and Ginn later crossed the plate on an Alex Smith ground out.

The Bears added the final four runs of the game in the bottom of the seventh. McDowell and
Crishaun Speight both scored on passed balls. Beesley, on base with a walk, scored on a bases-loaded error and, with two outs, Moen's double to right scored Hughes.

Coleman took the loss on the mound after giving up seven runs (four earned) on four hits and a walk. He struck out one batter.

McDowell had two singles in the game while Hutchinson had a double.

The Bears remain at home for their next games, hosting the Hinds Eagles for a 2:00 doubleheader on May 3.
