Bears split home doubleheader with Hinds Eagles

The Bears split an MACJC doubleheader with the visiting Hinds Eagles Tuesday, taking game one 14-7 before dropping the nightcap 10-1.
 
The Bears will close out the season on Saturday, and mark Sophomore Day and Military Appreciation Day, when they host the East Mississippi Lions in a 2:00 twin bill.
 
Hinds (27-15, 16-10) took a 1-0, first-inning lead in the opener. The Bears knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame when Andrew Beesley reached on a leadoff walk and scored four batters later on an Austin Moen single.
 
Eleven batters went to the plate for the Bears (15-28, 4-22) in their half of the third, resulting in six runs and a 7-1 lead. Scooter Ginn singled to lead off the frame and scored two batters later on Moen's double (he later added another base hit). T Tez Cole scored on an error and Crishaun Speight on an Alex Smith sacrifice. John Marcus McDowell, on base with an RBI single, and Beesley, on base with his second hit, both scored on another Hinds miscue.
 
After Hinds made it 7-2 in the top of the fourth, the Bears scored four more in the bottom of the inning to make it 11-2. Chance Groue's base hit scored Speight. Ray Hutchinson, on base with a double, crossed the plate when Beesley reached on a fielder's choice and Brantley Hughes' double scored Groue and Beesley.
 
Hinds made a game of it in the top of the sixth when they sent 10 men to the plate and scored four runs to pull to within five runs, 11-6.
 
The Bears then answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to move out to a 13-6 advantage. Groue led off with a single and scored four batters later on Hughes' sacrifice fly. A bases-loaded walk to Cole then scored McDowell, on base with his second single of the game.
 
On base with a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth, Beesley scored on Ginn's fourth hit of the game to increase the Bears' lead to 14-6.
 
Hinds then picked up their final run in the top of the ninth.
 
Bryson McRaney allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk through 5.1 innings to record the win for the Bears. He struck out one batter. Cole had a single in the game.
 
Hinds held a 10-0 lead in the finale before the Bears scored their only run in the bottom of the fifth when a bases-loaded walk to Cole forced McDowell across the plate. McDowell had reached base on a Hinds error.
 
Josh Merchant took the loss on the mound for the Bears. In 3.1 innings of work, he surrendered seven earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out one.
 
The Bears were limited to a Cole double and Hughes single.
