Five-run second inning propels Bears to 7-3 win over visiting Co-Lin

A five-run second inning helped propel the Bears to a 7-3 home win over arch-rival Co-Lin Wednesday night in the opening round of the Coca-Cola Baseball Challenge presented by Powerade.

With the win, the Bears moved to 8-3 open the campaign while Co-Lin dropped to 3-8.

A pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt helped Co-Lin take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Bears tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame when
Andrew Beesley and Payton Yawn reached on back-to-back singles and Beesley crossed the plate on T Tez Cole's sacrifice fly. Yawn drove in a pair of runs in the second with his second hit of the game while Brantley Hughes added an RBI single and two runs scored via a Co-Lin error and put the Bears on top 6-1.

Co-Lin used a single, error and sacrifice fly to score a run in the top of the third inning to cut the Bears' lead to 6-2.

The Bears scored their final run of the game in their half of the fourth, and increased their lead to 7-2, when
Isaiah Davis reached on an error to start the inning and scored three batters later on Yawn's double.

Co-Lin used a pair of singles and two hit batters in the top of the sixth to score the final run of the game to cut the Bears' margin of victory to four runs.

"I thought we took advantage of some of their (Co-Lin's) errors," said Bears head coach Ken Jackson. "They didn't play very well (and) I didn't think we played very well overall, but we played well enough to win. I thought our pitching was really good tonight; (it) kept us in the game. We made some errors during the game, but, again, I think our pitching was good enough to keep us in the ballgame and we swung the bats well enough to win."

Tyler Pigott pitched six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out eight batters. Josh Merchant struck out two batters in one inning on the mound to record the save. Cole hit safely in the game.

The Bears return to the diamond on March 10 when they host Highland (Ill) Community College. Game one of the doubleheader is set for a 2:00 first pitch.
