Homestanding Bears sweep Highland CC

The Bears swept a doubleheader from the visiting Highland Community College Friday, winning the opener 5-1 before taking the finale 7-4.
 
With the win, the Bears moved to 10-3 on the season. The Cougars dropped to 0-8.
 
Game One: The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth when walk and double resulted in a run and a 1-0 lead for the Cougars. The Bears tied it at 1-1 in their half of the frame when a Crishaun Speight base hit scored Kyle Coleman from second.
 
The Bears picked up the winning runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI doubles from T Tez Cole, Ray Hutchinson and Alex Smith and a wild pitch that allowed Smith to score from third (Smith also tripled in the game while Hutchinson also had a single).
 
Cody Miller picked up the win, despite being on the mound for only 0.1 of an inning. Blake Dunaway had a double in the game.
 
Game Two: The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Brantley Hughes. Hughes later scored on an error. The score went to 3-0 in the Bears' second when Andrew Beesley, on base after being hit by a pitch, scored on Hughes' double to centerfield.
 
The Cougars pulled to within 3-1 in the top of the fourth. The Bears got the run back, and made the score 4-1, in the bottom of the fifth. Scooter Ginn walked and scored three batters later on an error that allowed Smith to reach base.
 
An RBI double by Beesley and a two-RBI double by Hutchinson increased the Bears' lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Beesley also singled in the game.
 
The Cougars made a comeback attempt in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs on a single, error and pair of walks with two outs. But, they would leave a runner on base as the Bears held on to get the victory.
 
Carr Youngspent five innings on the mound, surrendering a run on six hits in five innings of work. He struck out seven batters. John Marcus McDowelll had two hits in the game.
 
The Bears return to action on March 16, at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson, when they host the Arkansas Baptist College Buffaloes for a 2:00 twin bill.
