Lady Bears drop a pair on Opening Day

Opening Day did not go as hoped for the Lady Bears softball team as they dropped a pair of games at Holmes Community College. The Lady Bears fell to the host Lady Bulldogs 5-0 in the opener and 11-1 to the Marion Military Institute Lady Tigers in game two.
 
Holmes scored all the runs they would need when they put two on the board in the bottom of the first. They went on to add single runs in the second, third and sixth innings to pick up the win.
 
Mikaela Smith had a double and single for the Lady Bears. Morgan Webb also doubled while Kelcey Bremenkamp, Jenna Duffand Gianca Holmes each had a single.
                              
Rebecca Davis went six innings in the circle in taking the loss for the Lady Bears. She allowed five runs, one earned, while giving up six hits, striking out one and issuing two bases on balls.
 
The Lady Bears trailed the Lady Tigers 6-0 before getting their only run of the day in the bottom of the sixth. Morgan Webb led off the frame with a single up the middle. She then moved to second on Amy Amy Bonvillain's sacrifice bunt and scored on Madison Parker's hit to center.
 
The Lady Tigers then added five more runs in the top of the seventh to reach their final margin of victory.
 
Kassie Shipley allowed six runs on eight hits in five innings to get the loss. She struck out three batters.
 
Kristie Sanchez had two singles for the Lady Bears while Jordan Fitzgerald and Kymberli McDowellboth hit safely.
 
"We've got to play more consistent," said Lady Bears head coach Shea Johnson. "We had some nerves and committed some errors that cost us some runs."
 
But, despite the loss, Johnson said his team is "getting better and better and will continue to build from here and keep working on it."
 
The Lady Bears return to the diamond on February 8 when they travel to Baton Rouge Community College. Game one of the twin bill is set for a 3:00 start.
