Lady Bears defeat #10 Illinois Central, Hinds in Jones County tourney

The Lady Bears upset the 10th-ranked Illinois Central Lady Cougars, 10-7, Saturday morning in their first game of the final day of the Jones County tournament. They then followed that with a 7-3 win over the Lady Eagles of Hinds.

Lady Bears head coach Shea Johnson said his team "played really well (today)" and that he hopes "we can continue the momentum. (We're) finally playing with some consistency."

The Lady Bears took a 4-0 lead over the Lady Cougars in the top of the second inning.
Miranda Magee walked with the bases loaded to score one run and three more followed due to errors. The Lady Cougars picked up a solo homer in the bottom of the frame to make the score 4-1.

Morgan Webb drew a one-out walk in the top of the third and later scored on an error to put the Lady Bears up 5-1. In the top of the fourth, Magee led off with the top of the fourth with the first of her two singles in the game. Crossing the plate later due to another error, she gave the Lady Bears a 6-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Cougars sent six batters to the plate, scoring three runs, to pull to within a pair, 6-4.

The Lady Bears answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth when
Kelcey Bremenkamp led off with a hit, and scored three batters later on an error, and the second of Jenna Duff's two hits scored drove home another run, giving the Lady Bears an 8-4 lead. The Lady Cougars responded with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make narrow the Lady Bears' lead to 8-6.

The Lady Bears closed out the scoring in their half of the sixth inning when
Jordan Fitzgerald, on base via a one-out error, scored on Bremenkamp's homer to leftfield.

Mikaela Smith pitched three innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk to get the win for the Lady Bears. Madison Parker and Kayla Sanchez both had a single.

Down 2-0 to Hinds, the Lady Bears tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third when
Kymberli McDowell reached base on the first of her two singles and scored two batters later on a Duff ground out. Madison Parker's RBI single, the first of her two hits in the game, sent Kristie Sanchez, on base with the first of her two hits, across the plate.

The Lady Bears made it 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth when
Lauren Walker reached base on an error and scored on Bremenkamp's homer to centerfield. They later added two more runs. Bremenkamp also had two doubles in the game.

Fitzgerald's lead-off, solo homer in the bottom of the fifth extended the Lady Bears' lead to 7-2. A leadoff homer by the Lady Eagles in the top of the sixth cut the Lady Bears' lead to 7-3. That would be as close as the Lady Eagles would get as the Lady Bears went on to record the win.

Rebecca Davis spent 4.1 innings in the circle pick up the win for the Lady Bears. She surrendered two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out three batters.

The Lady Bears return to action on March 3 when they travel to Raymond for a 1:00 doubleheader against the Lady Eagles.
