Homecoming 2017 ended on a sour note for Southwest fans as the Bears dropped a 30-17 MACJC South Division contest to the Pearl River Wildcats in Summit.

The Wildcats (3-3, 2-1 South) took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. Markevion Quinn put the visitors on top with 11:37 on the clock when he finished a nine-play, 64-yard drive with a 20-yard touchdown run. Mark Johnson kicked the extra point and later added a 37-yard field goal.

The Bears scored the only points of the second quarter when
Gunar Robinson nailed a 37-yard field goal with 9:23 on the clock. The first half ended with a 10-3 lead for the Wildcats.

A 22-yard touchdown catch by
Averyon Harris, closing out a five-play, 65-yard drive, along with Robinson's PAT, allowed the Bears to tie the score at 10-10 with 12:50 left in the third quarter.

With 5:21 to play in the third, the Bears (0-6, 0-3) took their only lead of the game, 17-10, when
Neil McLaurin hauled in a Juwan Adams pass for a 34-yard touchdown reception. Robinson booted the PAT.

The Bears' lead did not last long. Taking possession on their own 25-yard line following the ensuing kickoff, the Wildcats needed only one play to score as Quinn raced 75 yards for a touchdown. Johnson added the PAT to knot the score at 17-17 with 4:50 to play in the third.

Following a Bears' fumble, the Wildcats regained the lead when K. J. Breland scored on a 48-yard touchdown pass from Quinn. Johnson's PAT put the visitors on top 24-17 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats' advantage stayed at seven until the final play of the game when they recovered the Bears' second fumble of the day, in the end zone, to close out the scoring and give them the 13-point win.

"Whenever you give up those big plays defensively and you turn the ball over, it's usually not going to turn out well," said Bears head Coach Tucker Peavey. "I thought our guys played hard. On this hot, humid day, and with the lack of depth we have on the offensive line (because of injuries), I thought they played hard."

"I thought there were some plays down at the end (of the game) that we could have made, but didn't," Peavey continued. "But, at the end of the day, they played hard. We just have to fix these mistakes. They know what football players do-you don't fumble the ball and you've to be in position not to give up the big plays defensively and I think those two things led to the score being what it was."

Chase Hughes carried the ball 21 times for 91 yards to lead the Bears' ground game. McLaurin toted the ball 10 times for 74 yards and a touchdown.

Adams completed 18 of 32 passes for 197 yards with two touchdowns.
Javian Jackson hauled in seven passes for 56 yards while McLaurin had five receptions for 54 yards with a touchdown. Harris also had a touchdown catch.

The Bears registered 16 first downs in the game and were penalized six times for 60 yards. Robinson punted four times for 36.3 yards while
Casey Griffith had two punts for 43.5 yards.

Quinn carried the ball 13 times for 137 yards and pair of touchdowns while completing eight of 14 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown to pace the Wildcats' offense.

The Wildcats recorded 13 first downs on the day and had seven penalties for 75 yards. Johnson punted seven times for 40.9 yards.

The Bears return to action on October 12 when they travel to Perkinston to face the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs in a 7:00 South Division game
