Bears set to take on Holmes Bulldogs in Goodman

GAME DAY REPORT

Two teams looking to move to 2-0 meet on the gridiron Thursday night in Goodman as the Bears visit the Holmes Bulldogs.

The Bears enter the game following a 24-6 season-opening win at Coahoma while the Bulldogs come off a high-scoring 48-40 win over East Central.

Though happy with the week one win, Bears' head coach Tucker Peavey he hoped this week his team can "eliminate the unforced errors we made during the game. We missed a few blocks, I thought we missed some throws and catches and defensively we weren't in some gaps that we were assigned to."

Holmes gave up 428 yards of offense to East Central. Asked if he felt his squad could also put up big numbers against Holmes, Peavey said "When you watch the (game) film (of the Holmes-East Central game you see) East Central had a few big runs, but for the most part they just heaved the ball up and their receivers went and got it. They scored on some big plays."

"It wasn't that Holmes wasn't there to make the plays," Peavey continued, "it's just that East Central made them. So, we'll see if our players can go make the plays and if we can move the ball and score some points."

Peavey said that "there is no doubt" that eliminating turnovers will be one of the keys to the game. "That's a big factor in every game," he said. "If you have any, it's too many (and) we certainly had too many in the first game. We've got to protect the ball."

Bears' defensive coordinator Kelby Bowman said the Coahoma game "was a big learning experience for us. We've learned a lot about our guys. First of all, I know they're not quitters. I can see they're competitors and right now we just have to continue to build on what we've established from game one and that's preparation, just being fundamentally sound and controlling the things we can control."

"I thought our secondary played well," Bowman said of the Coahoma game. "We had some turnovers that really helped us in the game. I'm very pleased with the effort the guys displayed."

Looking at this week's opponents, Bowman said, "Holmes is a good football team. The numbers are there and it shows (the Bulldogs posted 578 yards of total offense against East Central-296 passing, 282 rushing). They have a dual attack-they can run the ball as well as throw the ball."

To combat the Holmes attack, Bowman said "We just have to be fundamentally sound. I think we have to be very simple this week. We can't be very complicated with some of the things they do. So, as a unit, we just have to make sure we're doing what we're supposed to do."

The game is set for a 6:30 kickoff at Ras Branch Stadium on the Holmes campus in Goodman. It will be broadcast on WAKH 105.7FM (K106) and on the internet at southwestbearathletics.com and k106.net and can also be heard on smartphones by downloading the k106 app. It can also be viewed live at holmesccmedia.com.
