Box Score

It was a tale of two halves for the Bears Thursday night as a 23-20 halftime lead fell by the wayside in the second half as they suffered a 55-30 loss to the visiting Northeast Tigers.

The Tigers held a 13-9 lead after a wild first quarter. The Bears took a 3-0 lead with 8:11 left when
Ruben Maldonado booted a 34-yard field goal to close out a seven-play, 34-yard drive.

The Tigers (3-1) answered with a 10-yard, 54-yard drive that ended with Dorian Banks reaching pay dirt on a six-yard carry. Austin Holloway added the PAT to put the visitors on top 7-3.

Taking the ensuing kickoff, the Bears (1-3) regained the lead at 9-7 when
Casey Haygood completed an eight-yard pass to Trey Fleming with 2:29 on the clock. Maldonado's PAT attempt was blocked.

The first-quarter scoring came to an end with 0:52 on the clock when the Tigers' Bailey Walker scored from 33 yards out on a quarterback keeper. Holloway's PAT attempt was unsuccessful this time, leaving the Tigers on top by four points.

The Tigers extended their lead to 20-9 with 9:34 left in the first half when an 11-play, 92-yard march ended with Mason Cunningham diving into the end zone from the one yard line. Holloway's PAT was good this time.

Haygood brought the Bears back to within four points at 20-16 when a 15-play, 75-yard drive ended with his five-yard dash into the end zone with 3:20 left before the half. Maldonado booted the PAT.

Taking advantage of a Tigers fumble, the Bears took a 23-20 lead with 0:04 on the clock when Haygood scored from the one-yard line to close out a short two-play drive. Maldonado booted the PAT to leave the Bears with the three-point lead at intermission.

Scoring 14 points within 10 seconds, the Tigers took a 34-23 lead in the third quarter. Walker scampered into the end zone from the four-yard line with 9:39 on the clock and Peyton McMahon returned a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown with 9:29 showing. Holloway added both PAT's.

The Bears quickly put themselves right back in the game on their next possession when Haygood found
Mikel Anderson on the receiving end of a 34-yard touchdown pass with 7:50 showing. Maldonado's PAT left the Bears with a 34-30 deficit with one quarter left to play.

Unfortunately, for the Bears, the fourth quarter belonged to the Tigers as they scored 21 points. Cunningham fired a 12-yard touchdown pass to Toreano Miner with 13:56 left in the game and carried the ball into the end zone from a yard out with 12:18 to play. Kyoshi Agnew closed out the scoring with a two-yard touchdown run with 6:47 remaining. Holloway added the PAT after each score.

"I thought we played a good two and a half quarters of football," said Bears head coach Tucker Peavey. "Then after that we just started making mistakes again."

The Bears picked up 351 yards of offense in the game. Haygood led the way with 77 yards rushing, and two touchdowns, on 13 carries. He completed 16 of 34 passes for 193 yards and two additional touchdowns (he was intercepted once).

Speaking of Haygood's performance, Peavey said, "I thought Casey played a very tough, physical game. (He) did a good job throwing the ball. As always, you're going to make a few bad reads and he certainly made the one bad throw down the middle (that resulted in the interception). But, Casey's a competitor and you just like having him around because you know he's giving it everything he's got."

Adding to the Bears' 175 rushing yards was
Nakia Trotter, Jr., who had 35 yards on 16 carries.

Ravian Pierce caught seven passes from Haygood, totaling 42 yards. Fleming had three catches for 28 yards and a touchdown. Anderson had a touchdown catch for 34 yards.

The Bears had 21 first downs in the game, were penalized 13 times for 96 yards and lost two fumbles. Maldonado averaged 33.5 yards on six punts.

The Tigers recorded 442 yards of offense. Cunningham led the team with 211 yards and a touchdown on 14 of 26 passing. Kenzie Phillips topped the visitors' ground game with 87 yards on 14 carries.

The Tigers picked up 26 first downs and were whistled for 81 yards on 12 penalties. They lost one fumble. Walker punted the ball three times for 33.3 yards.
Looking to return to the win column, the Bears take to the road for their next contest as they travel to Ellisville on September 29 to face the Jones County Bobcats.
