History-making season ends for Lady Bears with MACJC playoff loss at #7 Itawamba

The Lady Bears' history-making season came to an unfortunate end Sunday afternoon in Fulton as they were defeated 9-0 by the host Itawamba Lady Indians in game two of their first-round MACJC playoff series. The game ended after five innings.

Although it was not the way he would have liked the season to end, Lady Bears' head coach Shea Johnson said he was "extremely proud" of his squad. He expressed his thanks to his players "for their effort (during the season) and for setting a new standard for SMCC softball."

The Lady Bears finished the season at 23-21 and, at 16-12, were sixth in the MACJC; both win totals set program records. This also marked their first-ever appearance in the post-season.

Itawamba, ranked 7^th in the NJCAA, moved to 39-8 overall and will advance to this week's state tournament at Jones County.

Itawamba used a walk, double, ground out and error to score the only run they would need, and take a 1-0 lead, in the top of the third inning. They would go on to score seven more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth.

REBECCA DAVIS took the loss in the circle, giving up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and four walks. She struck out three batters. MACY FULTON gave up a pair of runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk in 1.2 innings. JENNA DUFF and JANA MCEWEN both had a single.
