Lady Bears split conference doubleheader with visiting East Mississippi

The Lady Bears bounced back from a 3-2 opening-game loss to visiting East Mississippi to pick up an 8-7 win in the nightcap and a split in their MACJC doubleheader Monday afternoon.

The split, giving them nine wins in their last 10 outings, left the Lady Bears at 17-13 overall and, at 10-6, in a tie with the Lady Lions (15-13, 10-6) for sixth in league play.

The Lady Bears trailed 3-0 before taking a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the first in the finale.
JENNA DUFF blasted a two-run homer off the scoreboard in left centerfield while AUSTIN PRUITT drove in a run with a double. Duff later added a single.

In the bottom of the second,
JESSIE PENTON's base hit to center allowed JORDAN FITZGERALD, on base with a double, to score and increase the Lady Bears' lead to 6-3.

A walk and homer in the top of the fourth pulled the Lady Lions to within a run at 6-5. The Lady Bears answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to go back up by three, 8-5. Penton picked up her second hit of the game and scored on an
EMILY TUMINELLO hit while Pruitt, on base via an error, scored on a fielder's choice.

The Lady Lions scored solo runs in their half of the fifth and sixth innings, but could not manage any additional runs as the Lady Bears held on for the win.

REBECCA DAVIS pitched 5.2 innings to get the win for the Lady Bears. She surrendered seven runs on 14 hits while striking out three and issuing one base on balls. MACY FULTON retired all four batters she faced, three by strikeout, to earn the save. KAYLA SANCHEZ had a double and single in the game.

Three errors helped the Lady Lions take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in game one. The Lady Bears answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, on Penton's double to left and a bases-loaded sacrifice fly from Sanchez, to make it 2-1.

The Lady Bears knotted the game at 2-2 in their half of the second when
KELCEY BREMENKAMP led off with a double and later scored on a double play. A single and double then allowed the Lady Lions to score what proved to be the winning run in the top of the third.

The loss came despite Fulton's performance in the circle. Going the full seven innings, the sophomore right-hander allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out three. Pruitt had a single in the game.

"I think it was important for us, especially playing the team we were tied with (in conference play) to come up with a split," said Lady Bears' head coach Shea Johnson, "which is which is something we really wanted." Of course, he said "a sweep would have made it better."

"I can't say enough about the pitching (in the first game)," Johnson continued. "They (East Mississippi) had four hits, we had three. I thought neither (team) hit the ball; errors are what caught up with us."

"I commend the girls for coming back & fighting (in game two)," Johnson went on. "Rebecca had done a good job through six innings, but they kind of got to her a little bit (late in the game). But, Macy came in and was able to shut them down and that's what you want your sophomores to do, to step up. I'm proud of the girls and the way they're playing."

The Lady Bears are set to return to action Wednesday in Perkinston as they visit Mississippi Gulf Coast. Game one of the conference doubleheader is scheduled for a 2:00 start.
