Lady Bears get doubleheader sweep over visiting Bishop State

The Lady Bears picked up their first wins of the young softball season Saturday afternoon with a 4-0, 15-8 doubleheader sweep of the visiting Bishop State Lady Wildcats.
 
Game one was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the Lady Bears (2-2) plated three runs. JANA MCEWEN slapped a double to centerfield to drive KRISTIE SANCHEZ across the plate. McEwen then scored on                      JORDAN FITZGERALD's double past third base and a MARKIA QUINN base hit sent Fitzgerald home to make put the home team up 3-0.
 
The final run of the game came when JENEY HUDSON doubled with one out in the bottom of the sixth and later scored on REBECCA DAVIS' base hit.
 
GIANCA HOLMES was the winning pitcher for the Lady Bears after going four innings and allowing only three hits. She struck out two batters and walked one.
 
JESSIE PENTON had a double and single in the game as did McEwen while KAYLA SANCHEZ hit safely twice.
 
The Lady Bears took control of game two early, using six hits and two hit batters to score six runs in the bottom of the first.
 
A line drive double by Fitzgerald in the bottom of the second sent JENNA DUFF and Kristie Sanchez home to increase the Lady Bears' lead to 8-0.
 
Bishop State (0-4) then found some offense and picked up a run in the top of the third inning and three more in their half of the fourth to make the score 8-4.
 
The Lady Bears answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to increase their lead to 12-4. The big blow of the inning came when KELCEY BREMENKAMP smashed a ball over the left field fence that also scored McEwen.
 
Five singles, a walk and a fielder's choice allowed Bishop State to score four runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Lady Bears' lead to 12-8. The Lady Bears then answered with Davis' RBI single in the bottom of the frame to make it 13-8.
 
The Lady Bears added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and shut Bishop State out in the top of the seventh to claim the win.
 
MACY FULTON was the winning pitcher. In four innings of work, Fulton gave up four runs on four hits while striking out one batter and walking two.
 
Duff and AUSTIN PRUITT both had a doubled and singled in the game. Duff drove in a pair of runs with her hits while Pruitt plated one.  Brock, McEwen and EMILY TUMINELLO each had two hits in the game while Bremenkamp homered and drove in three runs.
 
The Lady Bears return to the diamond Wednesday afternoon with a scheduled 3:00 home doubleheader against Baton Rouge Community College.
