Bears' record-setting season comes to a close with loss in MACJC semi-finals

The Bears' record-setting season came to an unfortunate end Saturday night in the semi-finals of the MACJC state soccer tournament as they dropped a 5-2 decision to the host Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs.

Several individual and team records were broken or matched during the season as the Bears finished with a 13-6 record. Gulf Coast climbed to 15-1 and moved on to Sunday's title game.

A James Beattie goal at 11:41 of the game put the Bulldogs up 1-0. The Bears knotted the game at 1-1 in the 20th minute when Jaime Delor stole the ball and beat a defender one-on-one and scored on a left-footed goal from the 18. The score remained tied as the teams went into intermission.

A Windham Whatley goal at the 62:00 mark put the Bulldogs back on top, 2-1. Goals from Jordan Hall and Beattie left the hosts with a 4-1 lead with just over 30:00 to play.

The Bears made it 4-2 with 9:00 left in the game when Francisco Alisiardi fed the ball through and Delor punched it in over the keeper for his NJCAA-leading 31st goal of the season.

Hall scored his second goal of the night, and the final one of the game, with just over 1:00 remaining.

"The game could have gone either way," said Bears' head coach Zach Mills. "They're (the Bulldogs) a great team, but we're a great team as well. The ball just didn't roll our way."

"We had some injuries (coming into the game) and a red card on our (starting) keeper (in the quarterfinal game at East Central) hurt us," Mills continued, "But, I'm proud of my team for everything they accomplished this season and I appreciate them leaving it on the field tonight."
