Bears on the road to Mississippi Delta

The Southwest Bears take to the road for the second straight week, and look to rebound from an opening-night loss to top-ranked East Mississippi, as they travel to Moorhead tonight in search of a win against the Mississippi Delta Trojans.

The Bears fell 69-20 in Scooba last week while the Trojans were shutout in Decatur by East Central, 34-0.

Looking back at last week, Southwest head coach Tucker Peavey said what the team "saw from the film is a lot of mistakes that we made were unforced errors; in other words, it was just mistakes on our part that didn't have anything to do with what East Mississippi did. If we can learn from that and grow from it, then we've got a chance to be able to function on offense the way that we need to."

The Trojans gave up 438 yards of total offense against East Central. Despite this, Peavey said that they are "athletic on defense. They look like they run well as a unit and I think they're a team that you have to block if you expect to run the ball and you've got to be able to pass protect. They're a good enough team that when you make mistakes they're going to make you pay for it."

"I think the emphasis for us this week," Peavey continued, "is us not making the mistakes and if the other team is going to beat us-whether it's offense, defense (or the) kicking game-it's because they do well (and) not that we do bad."

The Trojans' offense was forced to punt eight times, threw an interception and lost a fumble in their first 11 possessions last week. They were held to 222 total yards of offense and saw their quarterbacks get sacked five times.

However, Southwest defensive coordinator Kelby Bowman said "This is junior college football and we can't look at the fact that they didn't score (against East Central) and take it that it's going to be an easy game. We're going to have to prepare just like we did last week against the number one team."

Bowman said the Trojans are "a 50/50 run/pass team. They're going to run the ball just as much as they throw the ball. They're going to give you some one-back, two-back. I would definitely consider them a multiple-formation team. They definitely have the ability to make big plays because of the things they do on offense."

Looking at his unit's performance last week, Bowman said "Overall, honestly, I'm not very satisfied with how they played the second half. However, I did see some good things in the first half." He also said that what he "saw last week that can carry over to this week is our commitment to continue to play hard."

He said the mistakes "we made in the second half were things we are able to get straight (and) can get situated for this week."

Kickoff tonight is set for 7:00 at Mississippi Delta's Jim Randall Field. The game can be heard on WAKH 105.7FM (K106), on the internet at southwestbearathletics.com or k106.net and by using the k106 app on your smart phone.
