12th-ranked Gulf Coast takes a pair from Lady Bears

The 2015 softball season came to an end for the Southwest Lady Bears Monday with two hard-luck losses to Mississippi Gulf Coast, ranked 12th in the NJCAA. Gulf Coast picked up a pair of runs in the top of the 10th to win the opener, 4-2, before completing the sweep with a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
 
The Lady Bears took a 1-0 lead in game one when AUSTIN PRUITT led off the bottom of the fourth with a single, the first of her two in the contest. She moved to second on JESSICA PIPKINS' sacrifice bunt, to third on a fielder's choice and scored on the first of LEYTON TERRELL's two base hits.
 
A base hit, error and two fielder's choices helped Gulf Coast score two runs in the top of the fifth to go on top 2-1.
 
SARAH ROBERTS tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth when she blasted a lead-off home run, her ninth of the year and second hit of the game, over the fence in right field.
 
The score remained deadlocked until the top of the 10th when two doubles, a hit batter and an intentional walk yielded two runs for Gulf Coast (33-10, 19-7). The Lady Bears were unable to score in the bottom of the frame, allowing the visitors to take pick up the win.
 
MADDY TEAGUE took the complete-game loss in the circle for the Lady Bears, giving up all four runs (two earned) on nine hits and a walk. She struck out two batters.
 
Teague doubled for the Lady Bears while ASHTON DIXON and SHADEN MILLER both singled.
 
Gulf Coast led 2-0 before the Lady Bears (14-17, 4-23) picked up their only run of game two. Roberts reached base on a one-out error in the bottom of the fourth and scored on Terrell's line-drive double to left field. That would be it for the Lady Bears as Gulf Coast held on for the win and the sweep.
 
MACY FULTON pitched six innings in taking the loss for the Lady Bears. She allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits while walking one and striking out four.
 
Miller doubled for the Lady Bears while Pipkins and Roberts both had a single.
