Bears make first baseball Alumni Day a success with sweep of Itawamba

L. D. Coney vs. Itawamba
Chuck Barnes

Baseball | 4/13/2015 7:45:00 AM

The Southwest Bears scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the visiting Itawamba Indians 2-1 in the opener of their MACJC doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The Bears then completed the sweep, and made their first baseball Alumni Day a complete success, with a 5-1 win in the nightcap.

Game one was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when the Indians (15-13, 9-11) took advantage of a base hit and Southwest error to take a 1-0 lead.

Things looked bleak for the Bears until
Kaleb Clarke lined a two-out single up the middle (Jesse Pittman entered the game as a pinch runner for Clarke) followed by a Steven Williams walk. After Pittman and Williams moved up a base on a passed ball, an error by the Indians' shortstop then allowed both to cross the plate giving the Bears the heart-stopping 2-1win.

Jacob Buchanan picked up the complete-game win on the mound for the Bears (14-18, 7-11), giving up an unearned run on five hits and a walk. He struck out five batters.

Trent Gordy had two singles in the game while Walt Aldridge, Brady Anderson, L.D. Coney and Sam Richard also hit safely.

Clarke's single to left, scoring
Jarvis Warner, gave the Bears a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two. His double to left then sent Coney and Warner across the plate in the third to make the score 3-0.

With
Bryce Laird on base via a fielder's choice and Williams with a walk, Ross Buckley scored both with a double to left in the fourth inning to give the Bears a 5-0 advantage.

The Indians avoided the shutout in the top of the sixth when three singles produced a run. That, however, would be as close as they could come as the Bears held on for the win.

Cliff Hurst pitched just over five innings, giving up a run on six hits and a walk, to get the win for the Bears. He struck out five batters. Reliever Brady Badon closed out the game on the mound, retiring five of the six batters he faced to record the save.

Aldridge, Anderson, Coney,
Dylan Spiers and Williams had hit safely for the Bears.

The Bears stay on the home diamond for their next games, hosting the top-ranked Hinds Eagles on Tuesday. Game one is schedule to get underway at 3:00.
