Eagles take two from Bears in Meridian

The home standing Meridian Eagles took a pair of MACJC conference baseball games from the Southwest Bears Saturday afternoon, winning the opener 8-6 while taking the finale 5-2.
 
The Bears return home Wednesday for a pair of non-conference games against Delgado Community College. Game one is set for a 3:00 first pitch.
 
The Bears took a 2-0 first-inning lead in game one at Meridian when
L.D. Coney was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, Ross Buckley walked and both scored on Duncan Cornfoot's base hit to center.
 
Meridian (20-9, 8-4) answered with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the first to tie the game. They then added two more in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.
 
A bases-loaded walk by
Sam Richard in the top of the sixth scored Cornfoot to allow the Bears to pull back to within one, 4-3. But, the host Eagles got the run back in the bottom of the frame to make the score 5-3.
 
Coney got the Bears' seventh inning started with a single, his second of the game. He later scored to again pull the Bears to within one run at 5-4. The Eagles then answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and added another in the eighth to increase their lead to 8-4.
 
A bases-loaded groundout by
Trent Gordy scored Coney, on base via a walk, in the Bears half of the ninth and Jesse Pittman scored on a Cornfoot groundout to make the scored 8-6. But, the Bears would be unable to get any closer as the Eagles held on for the win.
 
Reliever
Brady Wilson took the loss for the Bears, giving up three earned runs on four hits and a walk. He struck out one batter. Buckley had two singles in the game while Walt Aldridge, Dylan Spiers and Gordy also hit safely.
 
In the third inning of the nightcap, Meridian would use a three singles, a home run and an error to score all the runs they would need and take a 5-0 lead.
 
The Bears (10-14, 4-8) made it 5-1 in the top of the fifth when
Jarvis Warner reached on a lead-off single and later scored on Buckley's one-hit base hit. The final run of the game came in the sixth when the Bears' Brady Anderson reached second on an error, moved to third on Spiers' base hit and scored on a Bryce Laird groundout.
 

Cliff Hurst took the loss on the mound, allowing all five runs (four earned) on five hits. He struck out seven batters.
 
Aldridge had a double and single in the game while
Tanner Whittington had two singles. Coney also had a hit in the game.
