Lady Bears swept at Gulf Coast

The Southwest Lady Bears dropped an MACJC South Division doubleheader to the Mississippi Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs in Perkinston Saturday, 7-2 and 8-3.
 
Two singles, an error and walk gave the Lady Bulldogs (24-5, 5-1) a 2-0 first-inning lead in Saturday's opener. The Lady Bears (12-12, 2-8) then tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth when JESSIE PENTON reached on an error and scored on a two-out double to left by SARAH ROBERTS. Roberts then scored on PAYTON LEWIS' base hit.
 
Gulf Coast used two hits, a walk, a wild pitch and an error to score four runs and take a 6-2 lead in their half of the fourth inning before adding their final run in the fifth.
 
MACY FULTON took the loss in the circle for the Lady Bears, allowing seven runs (only two earned) on nine hits and four walks in six innings. She struck out three batters.
 
AUSTIN PRUITT, JESSICA PIPKINS and LEYTON TERRELL all singled in the game.
 
The Lady Bulldogs again took a 2-0 first-inning lead in the finale. The Lady Bears got on the board in the top of the second when SHADEN MILLER reached base on a lead-off single (the first of her two hits in the game) and later scored on MORGAN BROWN's ground out. They then tied it at 2-2 in the fourth when Brown led off with a triple and scored on Pruitt's single.
 
The Lady Bulldogs then struck for five runs in the bottom of the fifth- on two hits, two walks, two errors and two hit batters-to take a 7-2 lead.
 
The Lady Bears scored their final run of the day in the sixth inning when Pruitt led off with a single, her third hit of the game, and scored two batters later on Penton's double. That would be it, however, as the Lady Bulldogs scored a solo run in the sixth inning to complete the sweep.
 
MADDY TEAGUE pitched 4.1 innings, giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and three walks to take the loss for the Lady Bears. Pipkins had a double and single in the game while Terrell hit safely twice.
 
The Lady Bears will next face Jones County at home on Tuesday in a 3:00 doubleheader.
 
Their South Division doubleheader scheduled for Sunday against visiting Meridian has been postponed due to the continuing threat of inclement weather. The games have been rescheduled for March 25 at 3:00.
