The Southwest Bears split a home MACJC doubleheader with the 11th ranked Jones County Bobcats Tuesday, winning the opener 6-3 before dropping a high-scoring 10-8 decision in the nightcap.

The Bears (8-9, 2-3) took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game one.
Trent Gordy's double to centerfield scored Steven Williams for the first run. A single by Ross Buckley was then followed by a run-scoring single from Duncan Cornfoot and RBI double by Brady Anderson. Later, a two-out, bases-loaded walk to Jarvis Warner scored Anderson and the Bears were up 4-0.

Cornfoot picked up his second RBI with a base hit in the second, scoring
Jesse Pittman, to make the score 5-0. His single in the fourth, scoring Williams, then closed out the scoring for the Bears and put them on top 6-0.

The Bobcats (15-7, 2-4) used an error and two-out base hit to pick up their first run in the top of the sixth to make the score 6-1. A two-out bases-loaded single in the top of the ninth closed the gap to 6-3, but reliever
Brady Badon struck out the final batter to record the save for the Bears and preserve the win for starter Sam Richard.

Richard surrendered five hits and an unearned run in six innings on the mound while striking out three and walking three. Badon pitched three innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit and two walks. He struck out four. Aldridge and
Dylan Spiers both had a single in the game.

Four singles, a fielder's choice and passed ball allowed Jones County to take a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the finale. The Bears answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame when
L.D. Coney led off with a single and later scored on Buckley's base hit to center. Two batters later, Cornfoot's ground out allowed Buckley to score, making it 4-2.

Three base hits in the top of the second gave Jones County two runs and a 6-2 lead. The Bears made it 6-5 in the bottom of the inning on hits from Spiers, Coney and a double from Buckley as well as a Jones County error.

A base hit and a Southwest error gave Jones County a run and a 7-5 lead in the top of the third.
Kaleb Clarke's double, his second of the game, and hits from Aldridge and Buckley then helped the Bears pick up three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-7 lead.

Jones County tied the game at 8-8 on a disputed play at the plate in the top of the sixth inning. Two hits, a walk and hit batter then resulted in two more runs in the top of the seventh and a 10-8 lead. The Bears put a runner on base in the bottom of the inning, but were unable to score as Jones County escaped with the win.

Jordan McCaffrey took the loss on the mound for the Bears, allowing two runs in 1.2 innings on the mound. He walked one batter and struck out one. Bryce Laird had three singles for the Bears while Anderson also hit safely.

The Bears return to action Saturday when they travel to Moorhead to face the Mississippi Delta Trojans. Game one of the conference doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00.
