The Southwest Lady Bears remained in the hunt for a spot in the MACJC state tournament with a 65-46 win at Hinds Community College Monday night.

The win moved the Lady Bears to 9-9 on the season and, more importantly, 5-4 in the South Division, a game behind Jones County and Meridian (who are tied for fourth). Hinds fell to 2-16 and 0-9.

Buckets from
Eyonna Wolfe (Jackson, MS, Provine) and Madison Mault (Purvis, MS, Lamar Christian) gave the Lady Bears an early 4-0 lead and they held a 12-4 lead with 11:59 left in the first half. The Lady Bulldogs pulled back to within five points, 14-9, with 8:24 on the clock.

With a
Lillie Snowden (Zachary, LA, Zachary) layup and jumper from Cortney Epting (Jackson, MS, Lanier) serving as bookends, the Lady Bears then went on a 12-0 tear to push their lead to 17 points, 32-15, with 3:00 before the break. They took a 34-17 lead at the end of the first 20:00.

The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Bears 10-2 to open the second half to cut their deficit down to nine points, 36-27, with 16:56 left in the game. But, a basket from Snowden and
Gabriella Cortez (Natchitoches, LA, Natchitoches Central)' three-point play extended the Lady Bears' lead back to double digits, 41-27, with 15:48 to go and they were never seriously challenged from after that point.

A 14-2 run late in the game put the Lady Bears on top 63-41 and they went on to pick up the 19-point victory.

"We didn't have great energy to start," said Southwest head coach Brent Harris, "but we picked it up. Lillie and (Gabriella) got some offensive rebounds that got us going. Danielle Washington came off the bench and gave us a spark defensively."

"I'm proud we didn't foul (the Lady Bears were whistled for only five fouls the entire game)," Harris continued. "That's something to build on. But, we've got to play with a little more energy. Everybody got in (the game) tonight and that's good. But, we've got to turn the page and get ready for a big one Thursday (a home game versus Meridian)."

Cortez led the Lady Bears scoring with 12 points (along with seven rebounds). Snowden picked up 11 points while Epting and
Talisa Sherman (Richland, MS, Richland) both scored 10 points. Epting came close to a triple-double as she finished the game with 10 rebounds and seven assists.

Wolfe had seven points on the night with Mault netting six.
Teshia Jones (Stringer, MS, Stringer) scored four points, Aaliyah Williams (Bassfield, MS, Bassfield) had three and Ke'Asia Gray (Mendenhall, MS, Magee) registered two. The Lady Bears made seven of eight free throws.

Hinds' Sh'nika Smith led all scorers with 17 points. The Lady Bulldogs made four of nine free throws.

The Lady Bears' South Division matchup against Meridian Thursday is set for a 5:30 start.
