Lady Bears split with visiting Northwest

The Southwest Lady Bears split a home doubleheader with Northwest Wednesday afternoon, winning the opener 11-10 while dropping the nightcaop11-0.
 
The Lady Bears resume play Friday in Goodman when they face Mississippi Delta at 11:00 and Holmes at 1:00.
 
Northwest took a 5-0 lead in game one Wednesday before the Lady Bears were able to get on the board. In the bottom of the third, JESSICA PIPKINS' (PERRY CENTRAL HS) single scored SHADEN MILLER (OCEAN SPRINGS HS) and JESSIE PENTON (GOSS ROAD SCHOOL). SEANA FLYNN (PASS CHRISTIAN HS) reached the plate on an error, making the score 5-3 in favor of the visitors.
 
The Lady Bears (6-4) went up 7-5 in their half of the fourth, thanks to two walks, two base hits (including Miller's RBI single) and two passed balls. Miller's base hit and two Northwest errors helped the Lady Bears score twice more in the bottom of the fifth and go on top 9-5.
 
Northwest struck back in the top of the seventh, slamming two home runs to regain the lead, 10-9. The Lady Bears tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Penton reached base on a two-out single and scored on Pipkins' double to left. PAYTON LEWIS (ALEXANDRIA, LA, ALEXANDRIA HS) then drove Pipkins home with the game-winner with a double to left field.
 
KEELY FORTENBERRY (TYLERTOWN HS) was the winning pitcher, giving up a run on three hits and a walk in 3.2 innings of work. She struck out two batters.
 
Lewis had four hits in the game while Miller and Pipkins both had three. Pipkins had two doubles. Penton had two hits.
 
The Lady Bears fell behind 4-0 in the first inning of game two and, this time, were unable to overcome their deficit. Northwest added five runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth.
 
LEANN JACKSON (PUCKETT HS) took the loss for the Lady Bears, giving up four runs in the first inning on four hits and two walks.
 
Lewis, Penton, Pipkins and JANA MCEWEN (NORTH PIKE HS) hit safely for the Lady Bears.
