The Southwest Bears swept the visiting Coahoma Tigers Wednesday afternoon, but it was not easy. The Bears scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to win the opener 3-2 and survived a slugfest to win the nightcap 14-9.

The Bears (5-2) were down 1-0 in game one before
L.D. Coney led off the bottom of the first with a walk and later scored on Reed James' (Germantown) base hit. James then scored on Kaleb Clarke's (Denham Springs, LA (Denham Springs HS) double to right field to give the Bears a 2-1 lead.

The score stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh when
Sam Richard ( Ridgeland HS) lined a leadoff double to leftfield, his second two bagger of the game. Two batters later, Duncan Cornfoot (Waveland, MS (Bay HS)) drove Richard home with the game-winner with a double up the middle.

Jordan McCaffrey ( Lawrence County HS) pitched one inning in relief, striking out one, to pick up the win for the Bears. Starter Charlie Waddingham struck out six and gave up four hits, while walking one, in six innings of work.
Brady Anderson and Trent Gordy (Canton, MS (Germantown, MS), both had a single in the game.

The teams combined for 23 runs and 21 hits in the finale. The Bears went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first and made it 5-0 in the second on
Jarvis Warner's single and Coney's double. In the bottom of the fourth, with the Bears on top 8-4, Richard lined a triple to right field to send Gordy and Anderson to the plate to make it 10-4. Both had reached on a base on balls.

Five walks, two base hits and two Coahoma errors helped the Bears scored their finals runs of the day and take a 14-6 lead after five innings of play.

Coahoma scored their final three runs in the top of the sixth and put two on base in the top of the seventh, but were unable to reach the plate.

Jade Whitten (Poplarville) went 2.2 innings on the mound in picking up the win for the Bears. He gave up two earned runs on four hits while striking out one and issuing one base on balls.

Richard went 3-3, with a walk, and scored two runs in the game. He finished the day 5-5 including two doubles, a triple and three runs scored. Coney had two hits, including his first-inning double, while Anderson and Gordy also had two hits.

The Bears return to the diamond Saturday afternoon when they take on the Lawson State Community College Cougars (Bessemer, AL). Game one is set for a 12:00 first pitch.
