Bears sweep doubleheader against visiting Arkansas Baptist

The Southwest Bears collected only seven hits on the day Saturday, but made the most of all their opportunities to run their record to 3-1 with a 7-2, 5-4 doubleheader sweep of the visiting Arkansas Baptist College Buffaloes.
 
The Bears took a 3-0 first-inning lead in game one when Brady Anderson lined a two-out, bases-loaded double to centerfield. The scored moved to 4-0 in the second inning when Sam Richard ( Ridgeland HS) led off with a walk and later scored on a wild pitch.
 
A double and two walks helped the Buffaloes get on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the third, but they would get no closer than 4-2 the rest of the game.
 
The Bears got one of the runs back in their half of the third when Ross Buckley walked and later scored on Anderson's ground out. They then added their final two runs in the sixth when Duncan Cornfoot and Richard both reached the plate.
 
Jacob Buchanan (Livingston, LA (Doyle HS) went four innings on the mound to pick up the win for the Bears. The freshman left-hander surrendered two runs on three hits and three walks. Dylan Spiers and Brady Badon ( North Pike HS) also pitched.
 
Anderson drove in four runs in the game while Richard and Buckley both scored twice. L.D. Coney had a double and Buckley a single.
 
 
Reed Thames' one-out home run to right field gave the Bears a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second in the nightcap. Scoring ahead of Thames on the play were Zane Frazier and Cornfoot.
 
A base hit and Southwest error allowed the Buffaloes to scored in the top of the third to make the score 3-1. The Bears got the run back in the bottom of the frame and made the score 4-1 when Walt Aldridge doubled with two outs and scored on Trent Gordy's ( Germantown HS) double. The score then went to 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Thames was hit by a pitch and later scored on an error.
 
The Buffaloes made things interesting in the top of the seventh. Three singles and a double gave them three runs with two outs, making the scored 5-4. But, reliever Kaleb Clarke (Denham Springs, LA (Denham Springs HS) picked up a save by inducing the only batter he faced to ground out to end the game with the tying run on base.
 
Richard pitched 6.2 innings to get the win for the Bears. He gave up four runs, three earned, on seven hits and a walk. He struck out five batters. Reed James (Germantown) had a base hit in the game.
 
The Bears return to action at home Sunday afternoon as part of a triple header. The day gets started at 10:30 when the Buffaloes face the Kaskaskia College Blue Devils.
 
At 1:00 the Bears are scheduled to play Kaskaskia and the day is set to end with a 3:00 matchup between the Bears and Buffaloes.
