Bears lose 58-55 heartbreaker to visiting Co-Lin

A capacity crowd was on hand as the Southwest Bears suffered a tough loss Thursday night as arch-rival Co-Lin left Summit with a 58-53 MACJC South Division win.
 
The Bears appeared ready to blow the game wide open in the early going, taking a 9-2 lead on a pair of three pointers from Trent Jeffries (Harrison Central)s and one from Jaylen Moore (Harrison Central). Another Jeffries' trey had the Bears on top 12-2 with 12:37 to play in the opening half.
 
Co-Lin (7-14, 5-7) fought back to within two, 19-17, with 4:50 on the clock. Xavion Dillon (Tylertown) then scored the Bears' final four points of the period to give them a 23-19 lead at intermission.
 
The second half featured seven ties and three lead changes. The final tie came on a Moore free throw that knotted the game at 48-48 with 2:43 remaining. A Jordan Lumpkins three pointer then put the visitors on top 5-48 with 1:33 on the clock. Jeffries made six free throws down the stretch for the Bears, but it was not enough as Co-Lin escaped with the narrow victory.
 
Jeffries led the Bears (8-12, 5-7), and all scorers, with 22 points on the night. Moore also scored in double figures with 12 points. The Bears made 15 of 20 free throws.
 
Co-Lin was led by Donte Watson's 13 points. They were good on 17 of 27 free throws.
 
The Bears play their final road game of the season Monday night in Ellisville against the defending national champion Jones County. Tipoff is set for 7:30.
