Bears ease by visiting Delgado, 64-62

The Southwest Bears moved to 2-0 on the young season with a tough 64-62 win over the visiting Delgado Dolphins Saturday afternoon.
 
Back-to-back jumpers from Emanuel Thompson gave the Bears an early 4-0 lead in the game. They later went up by seven, 10-3, on a three-pointer from Mario Doyle.
 
Leading by only two, 25-23, with 5:58 left in the first half, the Bears got three-pointers from Doyle and Guy Johnson to take a 31-23 lead. But, Delgado (0-5) scored 11 of the half's final 15 points to cut their deficit to 35-34 at intermission.
 
The second half featured four ties and eight lead changes. Delgado took its first lead of the game, 36-35, on EJ Winston's bucket with 19:26 left in the game, but the Bears quickly answered with a pair of Thompson free throws to go back up 37-36, with 19:04 to go.
 
The two teams would battle back and forth the rest of the way. Three pointers from Jeffery Dixon and Marcel Daniels put Delgado on top 62-59 with 2:27 remaining before an old-fashioned three-point play by the Bears'
Rodrick Sikes knotted the game at 62-62 with 2:05 still left. With the Bears holding a 63-62 lead, Thompson knocked down a free throw with 0:02 to give the Bears their final margin of victory.
 
Lafayette Rutledge topped the Bears in scoring with 16 points. Thompson picked up nine points and Sikes had eight. Terrell Miller led the team on the boards with nine rebounds. The Bears made 19 of 24 free throws.
 
Winston led Delgado in scoring with 20 points. The visitors made 15 of 21 free throws.
 
The Bears return to action Monday when they host the Mississippi Delta Trojans. Tipoff is set for 7:15.
