It was a case of winning ugly, but it was a win nonetheless for the Southwest Lady Bears as they defeated MACJC South Division foe Pearl River 52-43 Thursday night in Summit.

With both teams shooting under 30% in the first half, points were at a premium. The Lady Wildcats took a 3-0 lead before the Lady Bears made it 3-2 on
Talisa Sherman (Richland, MS)'s bucket with 17:04 left in the half.

Trailing 8-3, the Lady Bears (8-9, 4-4) took their first lead, 9-8, on a
Teshia Jones (Stringer, MS) three pointer with 11:11 on the clock. A Cortney Epting (Jackson, MS) three pointer put the Lady Bears up 13-11 with 6:40 remaining and they went on to hold a 19-17 advantage at the intermission.

The second half started out much like the first for both teams. Neither team scored a point until the Lady Wildcats' Essence Pulliam hit a free throw 3:33 into the half to lower the Lady Bears' lead to 19-18. The first field goal, an Epting trey that gave the Lady Bears a 22-18 lead, did not come until 15:09 left in the game.

Epting's bucket ignited a 10-2 Lady Bears' run that put them ahead 29-20 with 13:03 left in the game. A 9-1 run put the Lady Bears up 39-27, and seemingly in control, with 7:34 to go.

But, the Lady Wildcats (6-8, 2-6) had other ideas and went on a 10-0 tear to pull back to within two points, 39-37, with 4:04 still to play.

Ahead 43-40 with 1:53 to play, the Lady Bears took a 46-40 lead on Jones' second three pointer of the night. They then scored six of the final nine points of the game, including four
Gabriella Cortez (Natchitoches, LA) free throws, to secure the victory.

Talisa Sherman topped the Lady Bears with 15 points, five assists and two blocked shots. Cortez had 12 points, along with seven rebounds, while Epting finished the game with a double-double on 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Jones totaled nine points on the night while Aaliyah Williams netted three points and
Madison Mault (Purvis, MS) recorded two. Eyonna Wolfe (Jackson, MS) added one point. The Lady Bears made 12 of 21 free throws.

Pulliam led the Lady Wildcats with 10 points. The visitors made 12 of 20 free throws.

The Lady Bears return to the hardwood Monday night in Utica when they face the Lady Bulldogs of Hinds. Tipoff for the South Division game is set for 5:30.
