The Southwest Bears suffered a heartbreaking defeat Tuesday night in Wesson as host Co-Lin emerged with a 57-54 win in MACJC South Division action. The Bears played the contest without leading scorer Jaylen Moore who missed the contest due to a violation of team rules.

With six ties and three lead changes in the first 20:00, the game was tight from the start. The Bears took a 4-0 lead on baskets from
David Burrell (Milwaukee, WI) and Chris McIntosh (Jackson, MS) before the hosts tied it at 4-4 with 18:14 left in the half.

Down 12-11, the Bears scored seven of nine points to take an 18-15 lead with 8:09 on the clock. With the game knotted at 22-22, a pair of
Lafayette Rutledge (Gautier, MS) free throws and his three pointer put the Bears (6-7, 3-2) ahead 27-22 with 2:02 before the break. But, Co-Lin then reeled off the next seven points to take a 29-27 lead at intermission.

The Bears scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 34-29 lead with 17:18 left in the game and held on to the advantage for the next 8:04. Co-Lin (2-11, 1-4) took a 42-41 lead with 9:14 remaining and, after four lead changes and two ties, was up 46-45 with 7:43 to go.

Down 57-49 with 1:29 still to play, the Bears made a valiant effort to with the game or force overtime.
Trent Jeffries (Gulfport, MS) nailed a three-pointer to bring the Bears back to within five, 57-52, and Burrell made two free throws to make it 57-54 with 0:05 on the clock.

After Co-Lin missed a pair of free throws, the Bears had one last chance to keep the game going, but a last-second three-pointer was unsuccessful.

"I was proud of the guys who made this trip," said Southwest head coach Thomas Gray. "They came up here and they fought as a team. Being down
eight points with 1:29, I think it really speaks to the character of this team (that they fought back and had a chance at the end); it was something special."

"Hats off to Co-Lin, hats off to (Co-Lin head) Coach (Kenny) Bizot who's
a fantastic guy, a close friend of mine, and (assistant coach) Jake Reed. Those guys do a fantastic job. They fought really hard and they deserve this one."

Rutledge led three Bears in double figures with 13 points in the game. Jeffries totaled 12 points and
Xavion Dillon (Tylertown, MS) had 10.

Burrell netted eight points in the game, McIntosh had six and
Cliff Fernandez (Sandy Hook, MS) added five. The Bears hit 11 of 14 free throws.
