Bears suffer doubleheader loss to visiting Hinds

The visiting Hinds Eagles swept the Southwest Bears in an MACJC South Division doubleheader Saturday, winning the opener 12-2 and spoiling an excellent outing by Jason Milton with a 3-1 win in the finale.
 
Southwest returns to action Wednesday when they travel to Perkinston to face the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs. Game one of the South Division twinbill is set for 3:00.
 
The Bears (11-19, 5-9) trailed 4-0 in game one before getting on the board with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Payden Lynch reached base after being hit by a pitch. Moving to third on Kendric Hodges' base hit, Lynch scored on Tyler Towles' single to centerfield.
 
Hinds (21-12, 11-3) led 12-1 in the bottom of the seventh when Trey Wynn hit his first home run of the year just inside the foul pole in right for the final run of the game.
 
Jess Travis pitched four innings to get the loss for the Bears. He allowed 10 runs, two unearned, on eight hits while walking three. Austin White and Jade Whitten also pitched. Patric Devlin and Andrew Hulbert hit safely for the Bears.
 
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the finale when Anthony Durr singled to right field to score courtesy runner Sam Richard from third. Richard was on base in place of Trent Gordy who had reached on a fielder's choice.
 
Hitless through six innings, the Eagles finally put found their offense in the top of the seventh. Luke Reynolds led off the frame with a base hit to left followed by a walk to Caleb Upton. The next batter, Chase Lunceford, then belted a homer over the fence in right field to put the visitors up 3-1. The Bears went down in order in the bottom of the inning to allow Hinds to escape with the win.
 
The loss came despite five no-hit innings from Southwest starter Jason Milton. Milton struck out four batters, walked four and hit one in his stint on the mound. Brady Badon took the loss with two innings of work. He allowed all three Hinds runs on three hits while striking out two and walking one.
 
Logan Ferrell, Hodges, Hulbert and Wynn all hit safely for the Bears.
