Lady Bears split home doubleheader with Co-Lin

The Southwest Lady Bears withstood a seventh-inning rally to defeat their arch-rivals, the Co-Lin Lady Wolves, 5-3 in game two and gain a split in their MACJC South Division doubleheader Wednesday afternoon in Summit. Co-Lin picked up three runs in the seventh inning in the opener to pick up a 7-5 win.

Southwest heads to Poplarville today to face Pearl River in a makeup doubleheader. Game one is set for a 5:00 first pitch.

The Lady Bears (9-18, 5-11) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of game two Wednesday when Jessica Pipkins picked up the first of her two singles to score courtesy runner Morgan Brown from third base. Abi Hall followed with a base hit to right field to allow Mary Margaret McLaurin to reach the plate.

The score went to 4-0 in the fifth inning when Harley Myers led off with a walk and Brie Harper blasted a one-out homer over the fence in left field. The Lady Bears made it 5-0 in the sixth when Chelsea Nette singled with one out. She then stole second, moved to third on an error and raced home on a wild pitch.

Co-Lin (18-13, 10-8) made things interesting in the top of the seventh when, with one out, Kaitlan Cooksey walked and moved to third on Breanna McKenzie's base hit to centerfield.  Beth Fortenberry then hit a homer to left to make the score 5-3. That would be it for Co-Lin, however, as Southwest pitcher Maddy Teague retired the final two batters to preserve the win.

Teague pitched the full seven innings, giving up three runs on six hits. She struck out two batters and walked one. Harper finished the game 4-4 at the plate for the Lady Bears (and was 6-7 on the day). Kristen Gekler, Payton Lewis and McLaurin all hit safely.

Co-Lin took a 2-0 first-inning lead in the opener when McKenzie's single allowed Brooke Lagaist to reach the plate. Fortenberry later scored on a wild pitch. Myers reached base on a Co-Lin error and raced home on Harper's double to left to put the Lady Bears on the board and make the score 2-1 at the end of the first.

Co-Lin used two singles and a double to score two to push two more runs across the plate in the top of the second and extend their lead to 4-1.

The Lady Bears scored three runs in their half of the third inning to tie the game at 4-4. Myers led off the frame with a double to right field then moved to third on a Gekler groundout and scored on Harper's second hit of the game. McLaurin then stepped to the plate and launched a towering two-run homer over the fence in left.

The teams remained deadlocked until the top of the seventh when three singles and an error allowed Co-Lin to take a 7-4 lead. A one-out homer from Nette was all the Lady Bears could muster in the bottom of the inning as Co-Lin took the close victory.

Gekler pitched 5.1 innings in relief of Keely Fortenberry, giving up five hits and two unearned runs, to take the loss for the Lady Bears. Fortenberry allowed three runs on four hits in her 1.1 innings of work. She walked two batters. Abi Hall also pitched.

Gekler, Jessica Pipkins and Shaden Miller all singled for the Lady Bears.
