Bears fall twice at Mississippi Delta

The Southwest Bears dropped a pair of non-division games at Mississippi Delta Wednesday, falling to the Trojans 3-2 in the opener and 10-3 in the finale. The Bears return to MACJC South Division play Saturday when they host Hinds in a 2:00 doubleheader.

The Bears (11-15, 5-7) took a 1-0 lead in the game one when Logan Ferrell led off the game with a single to right field. Moving to second on Anthony Durr's sacrifice bunt, Ferrell advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Collin Carroll's sacrifice fly.

Two singles and a walk helped the Trojans (19-11, 8-4 North) tie the game with a run in the bottom of the third. The hosts then went up 2-1 on a Jacob Shempert home run in their half of the fourth.

The Bears tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning when Carroll reached base on a one-out single past first base. He then moved to second on Payden Lynch's base hit, to third when Cole Guyton reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Tyler Towle's sacrifice fly.

A base hit, hit batter and intentional walk allowed the Trojans to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Ty Dean then scored from third when Shempert grounded out to first, giving the Trojans the win.

J. D. Stockstill pitched two innings in relief, giving up a run on one hit, to take the loss for the Bears. He struck out three batters while walking one. Starter Chase Ladd surrendered two runs on five hits, while striking out two and walking two, in his 4.1 innings on the mound. Jordan McCaffrey also pitched. Durr, Andrew Hulbert and Towles all hit safely for the Bears.

The Bears were behind 9-0 in game two before making it 9-3 in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Durr singled to left and Carroll walked. Lynch then doubled to right field to score Durr. Carroll moved third on the play and scored on the throw back to the infield. Two batters later, Lynch scored when Patric Devlin reached base on a fielder's choice.

That would be it for Southwest as the Trojans added another run in the bottom of the fifth and went on to the convincing win.

Jacob Savoy took the loss on the mound for the Bears, giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits. Brady Badon, Sam Richard and Austin White also pitched.

Durr and Devlin both had two singles in the game for the Bears while Carroll and Trey Wynn also hit safely.
