Bears sweep visiting East Central

After surrendering a four-run lead in the top of the ninth inning, the Southwest Bears came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to defeat visiting East Central 8-7 Wednesday in the first game of the Bears' final MACJC South Division doubleheader. Southwest picked up the sweep with a 7-3 win in the finale.

The Bears (15-25, 9-15) will close out the regular season Saturday, and observe Sophomore Day, with a 2:00 non-division home doubleheader against Mississippi Delta. They will have to await the results of Saturday's Division games to find out if they will qualify for the upcoming state playoffs.

The Bears took a 1-0, second-inning lead in the opener Wednesday when Kendric Hodges singled to lead off the inning. He scored three batters later on Payden Lynch's base hit to left. Andrew Hulbert's bases-loaded double in the fourth allowed Austin Knight, Lynch and Anthony Durr to cross the plate and give the Bears a 4-0 advantage.

Three singles and a Southwest error in the top of the fifth inning allowed East Central (19-23, 9-13) to close the gap to 4-2. The Bears then got one of the runs back, and made the score 5-2, on Collin Carroll's two-out home run to left in the bottom of the inning. Durr's leadoff double to left and Logan Ferrell's single to right, his fourth hit of the game, gave the Bears a seemingly comfortable 6-2 lead after eight innings.

The East Central bats came alive in the top of the ninth as they loaded the bases with three singles. Kyle McCullouch then lined a one-out triple to centerfield to make the score 7-5. A Southwest error then allowed courtesy runner Cojuante McMillian to score the tying run and a base hit by Hunter Thrower made it 7-6, East Central.

Despite the loss of their lead, the Bears kept their composure and scored the tying run when Trey Wynn led off with a walk and scored on Cole Guyton's one-out single to centerfield. Sam Richard, on as a pinch runner, then brought the home fans to their feet when he advanced to second on Lynch's sacrifice bunt and a throwing error allowed him to continue to the plate with the winning run.

Brady Badon picked up the win on the mound in relief. In just under an inning of work, he gave up one hit and an unearned run while striking out one.

Starter Cliff Hurst went seven innings, giving up two unearned runs on seven hits and striking out six. Jason Milton surrendered four runs, one unearned, on six hits while striking out one in just under two innings of work. Wynn had a single in the game.

The Bears took a 5-0, first inning in the nightcap despite recording only two hits in the frame. Patric Devlin scored from third on a bases-loaded passed ball. Trent Gordy's single to centerfield sent Hodges and Carroll, both on base via a walk, to the plate. Two batters later, Lynch's double to left scored courtesy runner Knight and Richard, who had walked.

After East Central made the score 5-2 in the top of the second, the Bears made it 6-2 in the bottom of the inning when Ferrell led off with his fifth hit of the day, stole second, moved to third on Devlin's base hit and scored on a passed ball.

The scored went to 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Lynch doubled for the second time in the game and scored on Hulbert's base hit to right field.
