Bears swept at Pearl River

The Southwest Bears dropped a pair of crucial MACJC South Division contests to the Pearl River Wildcats Friday in Poplarville, 7-1 and 3-1. With a spot in the upcoming state playoffs still a possibility, the Bears close out the Division schedule at home Wednesday with a 3:00 doubleheader against East Central.

Trailing 4-0 in the opener Friday, the Bears got on the board in the top of the fourth with back-to-back doubles by Kendric Hodges and Collin Carroll. Pearl River added three more in the bottom of the inning to reach the final score.

Jesse Travis allowed seven runs, only two of which were earned, in four innings on the mound to take the loss for the Bears. He struck out two batters and also walked two. Jason Milton pitched four innings of no-hit ball in relief, striking out seven and walking two.

Logan Ferrell and Trey Wynn both had two singles for the Bears while Andrew Hulbert also hit safely.

The Bears (13-25, 7-15) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the finale when Ferrell led off the game with a single, moved to second on Patric Devlin's sacrifice bunt and scored on an error by the Pearl River catcher.

The Wildcats (24-18, 10-10) answered with two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. They then added the final run of the game in the fifth.
