Bears fall to #1 Jones County

The Southwest Bears took two on the chin at home Wednesday, dropping a pair of MACJC South Division games to the top-ranked Jones County Bobcats 9-0 and 11-4.

The Bears return to the diamond Friday when they travel to Poplarville to face Pearl River in a 1:00 South Division doubleheader.

The Bears trailed 10-0 in the fifth inning of the nightcap before courtesy runner Sam Richard scored from third base on a balk to make it 9-1. The score went to 9-2 in the sixth when Kendric Hodges, on base with his third hit of the game, scored from third on a bases-loaded double play.

Jones County (35-5, 15-3) added their final run in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 11-2. The Bears then responded with their final two runs in the bottom of the frame. Richard, on second base for Trent Gordy who had doubled, moved to scored when Andrew Hulbert reached second on an error. Advancing to third on a Cole Guyton single to left field, Hulbert crossed the plate Patric Devlin's hit up the middle.

Shane McKinley took the loss on the mound for the Bears (13-23, 7-13), allowing nine runs (one unearned) on six hits in 2.2 innings. He struck out two batters while walking five. Chase Ladd gave up a pair of runs on three hits in four innings. He struck out two batters and walked one. J. D. Stockstill also pitched.
Hodges had a double among his three hits in the game. Logan Ferrell and Hulbert also hit safely.

Jones County took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in game one and that proved to be all the offense they would need. They added six runs in the third inning and two more in the sixth.

Cliff Hurst surrendered nine runs (only three earned) and seven hits in six innings to take the loss for the Bears. He struck out four batters. Caleb Crumpler, Jordan McCaffrey and Austin White also pitched.
