Bears drop South Division doubleheader at Co-Lin

The final day of the Coca-Cola Baseball Challenge presented by Powerade did not end well for the Southwest Bears as they fell twice to their arch-rival Co-Lin, 10-0 and 7-1, in Wesson. The loss resulted in the third straight season split between the teams and allows Co-Lin to retain possession of the Challenge trophy for another year.
 
Despite the losses, the Bears (13-21, 7-11 South) maintain their hold on fourth place in the South ahead of Co-Lin (11-25, 7-11) due to an earlier doubleheader split with top-ranked Jones County.
 
Co-Lin jumped out to a 3-0, third-inning lead in game one Saturday and never looked back. They added solo runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings and scored four in the sixth to pick up the win.
 
Jesse Travis gave up five runs on eight hits in five innings to take the loss on the mound. He struck out one batter and walked three. Jacob Savoy and Jared Simon also pitched.
 
Logan Ferrell went 3-4 in the game to lead the Bears at the plate. Tyler Towles had a double while Collin Carroll, Andrew Hulbert and Austin Knight also hit safely.
 
The Bears were trailing 5-0 in the finale before picked up their only run in the top of the fourth. Carroll walked to lead off the inning and scored on Trey Wynn's line drive double to right field, the first of his two hits in the game. Co-Lin then added their final runs in the bottom of the frame.
 
Jason Milton took the loss on the mound, giving up four runs (one unearned) on five hits in 1.2 innings of work. He walked one batter. Sam Richard and J. D. Stockstill also spent time on the mound.
 
Ferrell had two hits in the game to finish the day 5-8 at the plate. Patric Devlin and Hulbert also hit safely.
 
The Bears return home Tuesday in an important South Division doubleheader against Jones County. Game one is set for a 3:00 first pitch.
