East Central takes two from the Bears

A run in the bottom of the seventh gave the home standing East Central Warriors a 5-4 win over the Southwest Bears in the first game of their MACJC South Division doubleheader Sunday afternoon. East Central went on to gain the sweep with an 8-4 victory in the nightcap and close out the first half of the Division schedule.
 
The Bears will try to return to the win column Wednesday when they travel to Moorhead to face the Mississippi Delta Trojans in a 1:00 non –division doubleheader. The games were originally scheduled for Tuesday.
 
Game one was scoreless Sunday until the Warriors (13-15, 5-5) used a single, two walks and two Southwest errors to take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Bears (11-15, 5-7) made it 3-1 in the top of the fifth when Collin Carroll blasted a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall.
 
The Bears took their only lead of the game, 4-3, in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Kendric Hodges scored from third on a balk. Logan Ferrell then lined a base hit to right field that allowed Trey Wynn and Patric Devlin to cross the plate.
 
Making use of two hits and three Southwest errors, the Warriors tied the game at 4-4 with a run in the bottom of the sixth. A hit batter, stolen base and another Southwest error then allowed the winning run to score with one out in the bottom of the seventh.
 
Sam Richard pitched one inning, allowing an unearned run on one hit, to take the loss for the Bears. He walked one batter. Starter Jesse Travis gave up three runs, two earned, on only one hit in three innings on the mound. He struck out three batters, walked four and hit one.
 
Brady Badon, Jordan McCaffrey, J. D. Stockstill and Jade Whitten also saw time on the mound for the Bears. Austin Knight and Payden Lynch both hit safely.
 
East Central took a 1-0, second-inning lead in the finale when Caleb Woods singled to score Chance Whitten from third. Whitten led off the frame with a double.
 
The Bears took a 2-1 lead in their half of the third. Carroll reached base on a two-out walk, moved to third on Payden Lynch's single to right and scored on an East Central error. Moving to third on the error, Lynch then scored on a passed ball.
 
Three runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the fourth put East Central back on top, 6-2. The Bears made it 6-3 in the fifth when Anthony Durr walked, moved to third on Carroll's double and scored when Lynch reached base on a dropped third strike.
 
East Central extended their lead to 8-3 with a pair of runs in their half of the sixth before the Bears picked up the final run of the game in the top of the seventh. Wynn reached base on a fielder's choice and later scored when Trent Gordy made it to first base on another fielder's choice.
 
Jason Milton threw 2.2 innings to take the loss for the Bears. He surrendered four runs on six hits while striking out two, walking one and hitting one. Richard, Stockstill, Whitten and Austin White also pitched.
Knight and Ferrell both picked up two hits for the Bears. Gordy had a double in the game and Andrew Hulbert also hit safely.
