Lady Bears drop doubleheader at Jones County

The Southwest Lady Bears dropped a pair of MACJC South Division softball games at 15th-ranked Jones County Tuesday afternoon, 12- and 9-1. Both games were halted after five innings.

The Lady Bears are set to return to action Friday in Poplarville as they take on the Lady Wildcats of Pearl River. Game one is scheduled for a 4:00 first pitch.

In game one Tuesday, Southwest was on the wrong end of Samantha Buller's no-hit performance in the pitching circle. The Lady Bears (8-17, 4-10) avoided the shutout, however, with a run in the top of the fifth. Payton Lewis walked to begin the inning, moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a wild pitch. She then scored on Mary Margaret McLaurin's sacrifice fly.

Jones County (28-0, 14-0) scored three runs in the bottom of the first then added seven in the second and two more in the third.

Abi Hall took the loss for the Lady Bears, giving up five earned runs on 14 hits. She struck out three batters and walked one.

Jones County picked up all the runs they would need in the nightcap with two in the bottom of the first. They added three more in the second, three in the fourth and one in the fifth.

The Lady Bears picked up their only run of the contest in the fourth inning. Chelsea Nette led off the frame with a single and scored two batters later on a Brie Harper double to left field.

Maddy Teague went the distance in the circle in getting the loss for Southwest. She surrendered nine runs, two unearned, on 11 hits while striking out one and giving up seven bases on balls. Lewis and McLaurin both hit safely for the Lady Bears.
