Bears fall to Coahoma, Arkansas Baptist

The Southwest Bears made the short trip to Jackson's Smith-Wills Stadium Saturday, but unfortunately, came home empty handed as they dropped a 4-2 decision to the Coahoma Community College Tigers and a 2-1 game to the Arkansas Baptist College Buffaloes.
 
The Bears return to the home diamond this afternoon with a doubleheader against the Buffaloes. The Bears (5-5) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first against Coahoma when Anthony Durr reached base on a one-out single and scored on Collin Carroll's triple to right field. Carroll reached home two batters later when Payden Lynch reached base on a fielder's choice.
 
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Tigers picked up two runs in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Justin Powell singled and then scored on Hudson Ross' home run to left field.
 
The score stayed knotted at 2-2 until the bottom of the sixth when two base hits, a fielder's choice and a balk allowed the Tigers to push the winning runs across the plate.
 
Sam Richard went the distance on the mound in taking the loss for Southwest. He allowed surrendered five hits while striking out five. Austin Knight had two singles in the game while Logan Ferrell and Andrew Hulbert also hit safely.
 
The Bears trailed 2-0 before picking up their only run in the bottom of the fifth inning against the Buffaloes (8-3). Patric Devlin, on base in place of Trent Gordy who had led off the inning with a walk, moved to third on a Zach Jones single then scored on a double-play.
 
The Bears put the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, but were unable to score allowing the Buffaloes to escape with the win. The Bears' loss came despite outhitting their opponents 5-3.
 
Cliff Hurst pitched went six outstanding innings to take the tough loss for the Bears. Giving up only the three hits and two runs (one unearned), he struck out nine batters and issued only two bases on balls. J. D. Stockstill pitched the final inning, striking out one.
 
Carroll, Durr, Ferrell and Kendric Hodges all hit safely for the Bears.
