Bears pick up 5-3, 8-4 sweep of visiting Co-Lin

A complete-game win by Cliff Hurst in the opener and a five-run sixth inning in the finale allowed the Southwest Bears to pick up a 5-3, 8-4 sweep over visiting Co-Lin Tuesday. The MACJC South Division wins also served to put the Bears up 2-0 in the 9th Annual Coca-Cola Baseball Challenge presented by Powerade.

Southwest returns to action Saturday when they travel to Ellisville to face the NJCAA's top-ranked team, Jones County, in a 2:00 South Division doubleheader.

Southwest took a 2-0 lead in the third inning of game one Tuesday. Trey Wynn led off the inning with a single to leftfield. Advancing to second on a stolen base and to third on an Andrew Hulbert base hit, he scored on a Logan Ferrell sacrifice fly. Hulbert later scored on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Durr.

After virtually cruising through the first three innings, Hurst stumbled a bit in the top of the fourth. Loading the bases on a walk, hit batter and base hit, Co-Lin scored three runs on a Wesley Watts sacrifice fly and Blake Talbot single to take a 3-2 lead.

The Bears answered and regained the lead for good, 4-3, with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. On base with a one-out single, Hodges scored on a sacrifice fly by Wynn while Patric Devlin scored as part of a double steal. The Bears picked up the final run of the game when Durr, on base after being hit by a pitch, scored on a passed ball.

Hurst scattered five hits while allowing three runs in his seven innings on the mound. He struck out nine batters while walking only two and hitting one.

After the game Hurst said, "My defense played well behind me. Coach Jackson (the Bears pitching coach) and I were on the same page because we had talked about the (Co-Lin) hitters all week, what they could and what they couldn't hit. Overall, I had a decent day on the mound and was pretty blessed."

Ferrell had a double in the game for the Bears while Cole Guyton and Tyler Towles also hit safely.

Two runs in the first inning gave the Bears an early 2-0 lead in the nightcap. Ferrell led off the game with a single to centerfield and scored three batters later on a Payden Lynch base hit. A Co-Lin error allowed Lynch to reach the plate.

A Colby Whitfield single and Konner Burke double helped Co-Lin tie the game with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. They scored a solo run in their half of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.

The Bears knotted the game at 3-3 with a run in the bottom of the fifth when Ferrell, on base via a fielder's choice, scored on another Co-Lin error.

The Bears sent nine batters to the plate and exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-3 lead. With the bases loaded, Hodges scored from third as he and Devlin pulled off a flawless suicide squeeze. Hulbert followed with a single to right field, his second hit of the game, to allow Wynn and Austin Knight to reach the plate. A Ferrell ground out sent Devlin racing to the plate while Hulbert scored on a Durr base hit.

Co-Lin picked up a single run in the top of the seventh, but could not produce further runs as the Bears took the win.

"When I came up to bat, I knew it would come down to a suicide squeeze," Devlin said after the game of his rally-starting play, "and I knew I had to get the perfect pitch. I executed it and we got the runs and got a rally going."

Brady Badon pitched 1.2 innings of relief to pick up the win for the Bears. He gave up an unearned run while striking out five of the eight batters he faced. He issued one base on balls.

Starter Chase Ladd gave up two runs, one earned, on two hits while striking out two and walking one in three innings on the mound. Sam Richard followed Ladd on the mound and gave up a run on four hits while striking out a batter.

Hodges had two hits in the game for the Bears while Knight also hit safely.
