Host Hinds takes doubleheader from Bears

It was a rough start to the MACJC South Division schedule for the Southwest Bears as they fell to the host Hinds Eagles 9-6 and 7-3 Wednesday in Raymond.
 
The Bears are scheduled to return to the diamond Saturday when they host Mississippi Gulf Coast in a 2:00 division twinbill.
 
Southwest (6-10, 0-2) trailed 2-0 in the opener before getting on the board with a run in the top of the third inning. Patric Devlin reached base via a one-out walk, moved to second on a ground out and scored on Anthony Durr's single up the middle. Hinds added a run in the bottom of the third to make the score 3-1.
 
In the Bears' half of the fourth, Payden Lynch singled to right field with one out and moved to second when Tyler Towles reached on an error. Both then crossed the plate, tying the game at 3-3, on Austin Knight's double to centerfield. The Eagles (10-8, 2-0) regained the lead and made the score 5-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
 
The score went to 5-4 in the top of the fifth when Durr led off with a double, moved to second on Collin Carroll's base hit and scored on a fielder's choice. The Eagles answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, making the score 9-4.
 
The Bears made it 9-5 in the sixth inning when Knight walked and later scored on Logan Ferrell's second hit of the game. Their final run came in the final inning when Carroll doubled to center and scored on a Towles base hit.
 
Cliff Hurst went 4.1 innings on the mound in taking the loss for the Bears. He allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits while striking out six and walking one. Jared Simon and Sam Richard also pitched. Devlin and Andrew Hulbert both singled in the game.
 
The Bears took a 1-0, first-inning lead in the finale when Carroll singled with two outs and scored on a Lynch double to right field. After Hinds answered with a run in the bottom of the first, the Bears regained the lead in the second when Zach Jones reached base on a walk and scored on Hulbert's base hit.
 
Hinds added a pair of runs in the second, third and fifth innings to go up 7-2. The Bears added their final run in the seventh when Hulbert led off the frame with a walk and later scored on a Durr ground out.
 
Shane McKinley gave up four earned runs on five hits in three innings in taking the loss for Southwest. He struck out four batters and issued two bases on balls. Chase Ladd, J. D. Stockstill and Jade Whitten also pitched.
 
Lynch added a second double in the game while Ferrell and Cole Guyton also hit safely.
