Lady Bears softball splits doubleheader at Northwest

The Southwest Lady Bears began a two-day road trip Tuesday with a doubleheader split at Northwest. The Lady Rangers took the opener, 9-5, while the Lady Bears prevailed, 4-3, in the finale.
 
Southwest (4-7) will be at Moorhead today for a 1:00 twinbill at Mississippi Delta.
 
In the win, the Lady Bears went up 1-0 in the top of the first when Payton Lewis singled to centerfield with one out and scored three batters later on the first of two Brie Harper base hits.
 
The Lady Bears then took a 3-1 lead in their half of the third. With Lewis on base via an error and Myers with a single, Jessica Pipkins drove them both home with a base hit up the middle.
 
The score then went to 4-1 in the fourth when Chelsea Nette reached base on an error and later scored Lewis' second hit of the game. Northwest added a run in the bottom of the sixth, but it was not enough as the Lady Bears held on for the win.
 
Maddy Teague pitched the full seven innings to pick up the win for Southwest. Allowing seven hits, she gave up three unearned runs while striking out six batters and walking three.
 
Myers and Pipkins both finished with three base hits in the game while Bethany Crawford added a double
In game one, the Lady Bears took a 1-0 first-inning lead. Nette led off the game with a walk. Moving to second base on a steal, she advanced to third on a Kristen Gekler single and scored on a throw to second.
 
Trailing 7-2, Southwest  picked up two more runs of the game in the fourth inning when Mary Margaret McLaurin blasted a pitch over the centerfield fence. Scoring on the play was courtesy runner Shaden Miller.
 
With Northwest on top 9-4, the Lady Bears added their final run in the top of the seventh when Harper lined a two-out double to right field to drive Crawford to the plate. Crawford was on base as a courtesy runner.
 
Gekler pitched 2.1 innings to take the loss for the Lady Bears, allowing seven runs on eight hits. She struck out one batter and walked two. Abi Hall pitched the final 3.2 innings.
 
Lewis had two singles in the game while Pipkins, Marisa Pruski and Hall also hit safely
