Bears defeat Rangers to open Southwest/Coca-Cola Classic

Led by Jaylen Moore (Gulfport, MS, Harrison Central) 25 points and six assists, the Southwest Bears picked up a much-needed 84-76 win over the previously undefeated Northwest Rangers Monday night in the opening round of the Southwest/Coca-Cola Classic.

The Bears (1-3) outshot the Rangers in the first half, 63% to 48% but still found themselves down by a point, 38-37. The second half proved to be the difference as they contiued their excellent shooting from the field and outscored their opponents 47-38 to pick up the win. They close out the Coca-Cola Classic Tuesday at 7:15 with a matchup against the Jaguars of Southern-Shreveport.

Lafayette Rutledge (Gautier, MS, Gautier) (19 points), Xavion Dillon (Tylertown, MS, Tylertown)18 points) and David Burrell (Milwaukee, WI, Believe Prep Academy) (13 points) were also in double figures for the Bears. Chris McIntosh (Jackson, MS, Murrah)added six points whileLeDerrius Simmons (McComb, MS, McComb)had two and Cliff Fernandez (Sandy Hook, MS, Dexter) added one. The Bears hit 25 of 29 free throws.

Ashton Woodson led the Rangers (5-1), and all scorers, with 26 points in the game. De' Sean Dockery added 21. The Rangers hit 13 of 22 free throws.
